Monday Roundup: Highlands baseball, softball pick up wins

The Highlands Ladybirds dominated their district opener, 15-0 over the visiting Bellevue Lady Tigers in four innings.

Highlands (9-6 overall) has won three straight and moved to 3-0 in 9th Region action. The Ladybirds have five games scheduled this week.

In trying to develop pitching for next season, sophomore Ella Greiwe made her second-ever varsity start and no-hit the Lady Tigers. She struck out four and walked one. The Highlands defense made just one error behind her.

On the other side, Highlands pounded out 10 hits and took advantage of five Bellevue errors. The Ladybirds scored seven runs in the bottom of the third and eight in the bottom of the fourth to force the run-ruling.

Morgan Coffey led Highlands at the plate going 3-for-3 with a double, two runs batted in and two runs scored. Brooke Dill and Brennah Dutcher added two hits each. Dutcher tripled and batted in two. Dill, Shelby Graybill, Josie Daley and Taylor Baioni also scored twice.

Highlands plays host to Cooper on Tuesday. Game time is 5 p.m.

The Bluebirds (8-8 overall) broke a five-game losing streak with a 9th Region victory on Monday at Highland Park.

Brady Gosney (2-1) took over pitching in the second and completed the game to record the win. He walked four and struck out two.

The Crusaders outhit the Bluebirds, 13-10. Bryce Ziegler went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, a double and a run scored. Mark Walkenhorst and Kyle Finfrock added two hits and Finfrock had two RBI. Austin Mayhew and Trey Bowden scored twice for the Bluebirds.

Highlands travels to Holmes on Wednesday. Game time is 5 p.m.
