But after two innings, Highlands led just 8-4 before pulling away to beat the host Bishop Brossart Mustangs (12-10), 20-4 in four innings.
"Bishop Brossart kept fighting. (The Mustangs) put together some good at-bats," said Jeremy Baioni, Highlands Head Coach. "We left a couple balls up. We had a big inning in the third and really settled down on the mound. We made some really good defensive plays later in the game. They put pressure on us early on."

Bluebirds Run Winning Streak over NewCath to 12 Games

"I didn't even know we were 12-0 in the series to be honest," said Ethan Kavanagh, Highlands junior shortstop. "We just come out and play hard every single day. (Newport Central Catholic) is just another opponent that we have to beat. It's a big game in the season. We come come out playing the game like we always do."
Highlands ran its winning streak to that many wins in a row over the Thoroughbreds (8-10) with a 7-1 win at Highland Park. The Bluebirds moved to 3-0 in 36th District play with their 39th straight win over district opponents and 7-0 in region play. NewCath was the last district team to beat Highlands, 3-1 in the region championship on May 31, 2012.

Tuesday Highlands Round-Up
"They came out a little nervous. We came out and made a couple errors on defense in the first inning," said Rob Coffey, Highlands Head Coach. "But once we settled down, defense was super solid. Pitching was good. We really, really attacked in the box hitting-wise. We were really focused. Our base hits were clean. We've been working on that all winter being super aggressive early in the count so we can hit good pitches."

No Upsetting the Bluebirds
Both the Highlands Bluebirds baseball (22-13 overall) and softball (17-10) more than continued to show why they are the teams to beat in their respective 36th District semifinal games Wednesday. The baseball team took care of the Newport Wildcats, 18-0 at Highland Park and the softball team finished off the Bellevue Tigers, 15-0 in three innings after rain Tuesday forced the postponement for day.

Rough Day for Highlands Sports
Facing the arch-rival Covington Catholic Colonels (10-4 overall) in front of about 1,000 of their fans, the Bluebirds (11-5) hoped to earn a huge 9th Region victory. Instead, the Colonels scored six runs in the fourth inning on their way to an 11-0 six-inning run-ruling Friday.

Runs have not always come as easy as previous seasons for the Highlands Bluebirds baseball team so it is understandable why a 4-0 deficit in the first inning would make fans nervous. But Highlands (22-12 overall) did not flinch. Instead, the Bluebirds dominated the rest of the way en route to an 11-4 victory over the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds (16-14) in the 36th District championship Friday at Highland Park.

The Highlands Ladybirds softball team (21-10 overall) is 15-0 against the region and opens the tournament Monday at 1 p.m. against Covington Holy Cross at Vets Field in Newport. The winner takes on either Dixie Heights or Boone County on Tuesday at 4:15 p.m.

Highlands baseball, softball earn 36th District crowns
That is play solid defense. The Bluebirds (20-17 overall) took care of Newport Central Catholic, 5-0 at Bellevue for their fifth straight district championship and the Ladybirds (21-10) edged NewCath, 2-1 to win their third straight district crown. The Bluebirds have outscored district opponents, 44-0 on the season and the Ladybirds outscored district competition 76-1.
