The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team (10-8 overall) saw a great beginning to 36th District action with a 10-0 blanking of the Newport Wildcats on Monday.

Highlands has won two in a row and five of its last six games. The Bluebirds moved to 6-2 in 9th Region action.

Senior Spencer Dee threw a six-inning perfect game in the win. He struck out nine.

"We're at the halfway point of our season and just beginning to understand that, regardless of our opponent, if we focus on winning every pitch, we will be able to compete at a high level," said Jeremy Baioni, Highlands Head Coach. "Another outstanding pitching performance from Spencer Dee (Monday) was a big part of that."

Highlands recorded nine hits. The Bluebirds pulled away with five runs in the top of the fifth inning. Ethan Kavanagh and Drew Rom homered to drive in three runs each. Trey Bowden, Sam Hennigan and Ethan Doty had doubles.

Highlands also saw a lot of success with its running game swiping nine bases. Kyle Rust and Carson Fitters stole two bases each.

"Toward the beginning, we were struggling at the plate," said Tyler Schwalbach, Highlands senior. "I would say it has to do with approaches at the plate. Once we get that down, we should be all good."

The Bluebirds continue district action Wednesday against Newport Central Catholic at Highland Park. Game time is 5 p.m.
