Bluebirds Snap Losing Streak

Highlands pounds Holy Cross in 9th Region Action

It took one great afternoon to end the six-game losing streak.

The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team (5-6 overall) scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back on the way to a 13-4 9th Region victory Wednesday over the Covington Holy Cross Indians (6-7). Highlands moved to 2-1 in region play with the second game against 35th District competition in as many days.

"It's important that we as coaches and players stick to the process," said Jeremy Baioni, Highlands Head Coach. "It's a long season and we play a lot of really good teams. Part of what we've gone through the last week or so has given us quite a bit to work on. Our guys are committed to doing just that."

Highlands batted .516 (16-of-31) in the win. Senior Kyle Rust went 2-for-2 with two runs batted in and two runs scored and Trey Bowden also went 2-for-2 with an RBI, double and two runs scored with Carson Fitters going 2-for-3 with two RBI, a double and run scored. Ethan Doty hit a two-run home run for the Bluebirds with Ryan Adkins, Kyle Finfrock, Spencer Dee and Jackson Recht adding doubles.

Dee picked up the pitching win for Highlands going into the sixth inning. He struck out five while allowing 10 hits and walking none. Brady Gosney finished off the game striking out one, walking one and allowing no hits.

Highlands takes on Ryle (3-6) in region action on Thursday. Game time is 4 p.m. at Meinken Field in Covington where Covington Holmes plays its home games.
