Mixed Results for Highlands Softball, Baseball

Ladybirds double up Beechwood

The Highlands Ladybirds softball team (4-4 overall) followed up the win over Newport Central Catholic on Wednesday with a dominating 9th Region performance Thursday.

Highlands doubled up Beechwood, 20-10 in five innings at Winkler Field playing mostly reserves and moving to 2-1 in region play. Senior Jenna Martin picked up the pitching win striking out two for Highlands. Junior Maleah Abner and eighth-grader Caroline Class had three hits each to lead the Ladybirds.

"It's nice to get some very deserving some innings and well-deserved at-bats," said Rob Coffey, Highlands Head Coach. "That drives the competitiveness within our program to a new level."

Highlands plays twice in the Shelby County Invitational on Friday. The Ladybirds take on Williamstown (8-2) at 7 p.m. and Shelby County (4-3) at 8:30 p.m.

Baseball:
Ryle 4, Highlands 3:

The Bluebirds (5-7 overall) could not make it back-to-back 9th Region wins falling to 2-2 in region play in a tight one at Meinken Field in Covington.

Highlands outhit Ryle, 7-2. But the Raiders took advantage of five walks and three Bluebird errors. Kyle Rust and Ethan Kavanagh led Highlands with two hits each. Kavanagh had a double.

Drew Rom started the game for Highlands pitching six innings and striking out eight. Ethan Doty then pitched the seventh striking out all three Ryle hitters.

Highlands plays twice at Dixie Heights on Saturday. The Bluebirds face Hilliard (Ohio) Bradley at 1:30 p.m. and the host Colonels at 4 p.m.
