The Bluebirds played five games between Tuesday and Saturday and came away with two wins Saturday at Dixie Heights to move back to .500 on the year. Highlands earned its first win of the year against a non-Kentucky team, 3-2 over the Hilliard (Ohio) Bradley Jaguars, located just outside Columbus, before pulling away from the host Colonels, 11-3 to move to 3-2 in 9th Region action.
Highlands put away Dixie Heights with six runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Bluebirds outhit the Colonels, 15-3. Kyle Finfrock led the Bluebirds going 3-for-3 with a double and run batted in with Joe Steiden going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Brady Gosney and Sam Hennigan also had two hits. Hennigan scored twice and Nolan Turner added a double. Ethan Kavanagh, Grant Summers and Ryan Adkins had one stolen base each.
"Our hitting was a lot better that game," Kavanagh said. "We found ways to get on, score and get the win. The Dixie pitchers were mostly throwing fastballs. We were getting really good pitches to hit and we exposed their weaknesses. We did our jobs."
Senior Ethan Doty picked up the win throwing four innings of one-hit ball. He struck out seven and walked six. Sophomore Grady Cramer pitched the last three innings and allowed just two hits, two walks and struck out four.
"The best thing about (Saturday) is that it was a quality win with contributions from everyone on our roster," said Jeremy Baioni, Highlands Head Coach. "We were really proud of the way guys stepped up when called on."
The first game saw Hunter Dreves throw a complete-game for the Bluebirds. He struck out five Jaguars, walked three and allowed just four hits and two earned runs.
Highlands made the most of its seven hits scoring the game-winner in the top of the seventh. Kavanagh and Drew Rom had two hits each. Rom doubled twice and Kyle Rust had another double.
Highlands travels to St. Henry on Monday. Game time is 5 p.m.
