That is play solid defense. The Bluebirds (20-17 overall) took care of Newport Central Catholic, 5-0 at Bellevue for their fifth straight district championship and the Ladybirds (21-10) edged NewCath, 2-1 to win their third straight district crown. The Bluebirds have outscored district opponents, 44-0 on the season and the Ladybirds outscored district competition 76-1.
"You have to pitch well and play good defense," said Jeremy Baioni, Highlands Head Coach. "You have to make plays. Whenever you shut somebody out, it takes the pressure off your offense. Our guys did not go up to the plate tense."
The Ladybirds scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth and outhit NewCath, 6-4 in the error-free contest. Zoie Barth had a run batted in ground out in that inning for Highlands. Barth and Rachel Gabbard led the Ladybirds with two hits each.
Gabbard drove in Highlands' other run in the bottom of the first. She singled home Shelby Graybill from second with two out. NewCath tied the game with a run in the fifth inning.
Tournament Most Valuable Player Bailey Spencer threw another gem retiring the first nine NewCath batters on her way to 11 strikeouts. She outdualed NewCath junior pitcher Haley Meyers.
In the baseball game, Ethan Doty (4-5) picked up the pitching win throwing five innings. He struck out seven and walked one. Drew Rom worked the sixth inning and before Ricky Raisor threw the seventh to notch the save. Rom struck out three batters and Raisor one to pick up his first save of the season.
Highlands outhit NewCath, 10-7. Trey Bowden, Mark Walkenhorst and Brad Greene had two hits each. Greene, Kreeger and Rom doubled and Bowden hit his first home run of the season to lead off the first inning. Kreeger hit in two with his double in the fourth inning.
The region tournaments start Monday. The Bluebirds will face district runner-ups Covington Catholic, Ryle or Dixie Heights. The Ladybirds take on either district runner-ups St. Henry, Boone County or Covington Holy Cross.
