The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team (7-4 overall) dropped a 7-5 decision at Cincinnati St. Xavier on Sunday. The Bluebirds saw their six-game winning streak snapped as a result.
Highlands outhit the Bombers, 9-6 but committed three errors to none for the hosts. Highlands led 5-4 entering the bottom of the sixth. But St. Xavier scored three in its half of the inning to win.
Through 11 games, Highlands has four players batting. 400 or better. They are junior Ethan Doty at .471 (8-for-17, double, four runs batted in), Drew Rom at .429 (9-for-21, seven runs batted in), junior Kyle Rust at .405 (15-of-37, three runs batted in) and senior Ricky Raisor at .400 (2-of-5, three runs batted in). Rom and Kyle Finfrock lead Highlands with three doubles each and Mark Walkenhorst has a team-high 10 runs batted in.
Highlands has two triples and a home run on the season. Trey Bowden has both Bluebird triples and Finfrock the home run. Highlands is hitting .323 (101-of-313) as a team with 36 walks, 43 strikeouts and 17 stolen bases. Bowden and Doty have three walks each and Austin Beal has stolen a team-high six bases.
The Highlands pitching staff has a team earned-run average of 1.96. Raisor leads the Bluebirds with a 3-1 record, 16 stikeouts and Rom has the team's lone save.
The Bluebirds battle Covington Catholic on Tuesday. Game time is 5 p.m. at Highland Park.
