Bluebirds win in extra innings

The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team (4-3 overall) had to go to extra innings Monday.

But in the top of the 11th, Highlands scored five times to post an 8-3 victory over the University Heights Blazers from Hopkinsville. The Bluebirds outhit the Blazers, 19-8 and took advantage of four University Heights errors while committing just one. Drew Rom led Highlands going 5-for-6 with a run scored, a stolen base and a double. Ethan Doty went 4-for-6 with a run batted in. Kyle Rust, Brady Gosney and Trey Bowden had two hits each. Bowden stole two bases and recorded the first triple of the season for the Bluebirds. Trent Casebolt added a double.

Gosney (1-0) picked up the win for Highlands. He struck out six in the final three innings.

Highlands held a 3-0 lead late in the game. But University Heights tied it with one in the fifth and two in the seventh.

The Bluebirds play twice Tuesday back at Madisonville. They face Livingston Central at 2 p.m. and Webster County at 5 p.m.
