Thursday Sports Briefs

The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team lost to Elizabeth (NJ) on Thursday at Myrtle Beach.

The Bluebirds (7-7) have dropped two straight after winning the first three to start the trip. They conclude the seven-game stretch with games against Lenape (NJ) at Noon and Akron Archbishop Hoban (Ohio) at 3p.m.

St. Henry softball 7, NCC 1:

Noelle Butts threw a one-hitter to lift the host Lady Crusaders past the Thoroughbreds (3-3) on Thursday.

The only run for NewCath came in the third. Christine Enzweiler reached on an error, moved to second on a passed ball, third on a ground out and scored when Molly Mertle grounded out. The game was tied at one at that point.

Taylor Burkhart pitched the first two innings before Sarah Neace pitched the next four. The duo struck out nine. Amanda Schabell picked up the lone hit for NewCath.

St. Henry did not pull away until the fifth inning. The Lady Crusaders scored five runs in that frame.

NewCath does not play again until Monday. The Thoroughbreds play host to Dixie Heights at 5 p.m.

Wednesday Sports Briefs

The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped in Myrtle Beach with a 7-2 loss to Victory (N.Y.) on Wednesday.

Highlands (7-6) went up 1-0 early but could not hold the lead. The Bluebirds are 3-1 on the road trip.

The Bluebirds continue action today at 9 a.m. against Elizabeth (N.J.).

NCC Baseball 15, Newport 2 (5 innings):

The Thoroughbreds (3-4) moved to 2-0 in 36th District action with another run-ruling Wednesday.

NewCath outhit Newport, 11-5. Alex Grau led the way going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Josh Cain, Pete Collopy and Zach Pangallo all went 2-for-2. Cain had two RBI and scored three runs with Collopy and Pangallo recording three RBI and scoring two and one run respectively. Daylin Garland also went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Thoroughbreds.

Cain picked up the pitching win for NewCath. He struck out one in two innings of work. Mitch Pangallo struck out four in three relief innings.

NewCath plays host to Bishop Brossart on Friday at 5 p.m. The Thoroughbreds lost in the state quarterfinals last year and the Mustangs lost in the state semifinals.

NCC Softball 14, Scott 0:

The Thoroughbreds snapped a two-game losing streak with a second win over the Lady Eagles on Wednesday.

NewCath moved to 3-2 with the victory. The Thoroughbreds have outscored the Lady Eagles, 30-0 on the year.

NewCath travels to St. Henry for a 5:30 p.m. contest today.

Tuesday Sports Briefs

The Highlands Bluebirds moved to 7-5 with two more victories in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Tuesday.

Highlands opened the day with a 10-8 win over Liverpool (N.Y.). Hector Molina once again led the Bluebirds going 2-for-4 with a triple, three runs batted in and three runs scored. Evan Allen and Jac Collinsworth followed with two hits each and Quentin Murray doubled.

Jake Liggett picked up the win throwing five relief innings for Highlands. He struck out three.

Highlands then defeated Lake Catholic, 7-5. The Bluebirds fell behind 5-0 after the first inning before rallying for the win. Joey Cochran threw a complete game to pick up the win for the Bluebirds.

Highlands returns to action today. The Bluebirds take on Victor (N.Y.) at 3 p.m.

NewCath baseball splits:

The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds split their games Tuesday.

They run-ruled Dayton, 16-3 in five innings before falling 7-6 to Cincinnati McNicholas. NewCath is 2-4 on the season.

The Thoroughbreds face in-town rival Newport at 5 p.m. today.

Bracken County softball 7, NCC 4:

The Thoroughbreds fell to 2-2 with the loss Tuesday.

NewCath plays host to Scott at 5:30 p.m. today.

HHS softball goes 2-1 Saturday; NCC blasts Scott

The Highlands Bluebirds softball team is 3-2 overall after winning two of its final three games Saturday in the Uncle Pete Invitational at Taylor Mill’s Softball City.

Highlands defeated the Nicholas County Lady Jackets, 5-1 in five innings to open the day before beating Bishop Brossart, 9-8 and losing 11-1 to Notre Dame. The Bluebirds saw several games cancelled before opening the season Friday.

Highlands batted .250 (6-for-24) in the win over Nicholas County. Ashley Grosser had a double and two runs batted in for the Bluebirds.

Pitcher Bailey Spencer again threw another good game for the Bluebirds. She struck out 12 and allowed just two hits and one earned run.

The night did not end well for Highlands against the Pandas. Shelby Graybill led the Bluebirds going 2-for-3 with a triple and run batted in.

Highlands is scheduled to face Simon Kenton in Fort Thomas at 5:30 p.m. today.

NCC Softball 16, Scott 0:
The Thoroughbreds opened the season with a three-inning win Saturday after several games were cancelled earlier in the week.

Sarah Neace threw a complete game on the mound for Newport Central Catholic. She struck out three.

Michaela Ware led NewCath going 3-for-4 with a double. Teammate Loren Zimmerman had a three-run home run and four runs batted in with Morgan Martini going 2-for-3 with two RBI and Taylor Burkhart adding two more RBI.

NewCath is scheduled to travel to Newport for a 5 p.m. contest today.

More Games Cancelled

Temperatures in the 20s forced more cancellations of softball games Thursday.

Highlands was to travel to Dayton and Newport Central Catholic was to play host to Notre Dame. Neither team has played a game this season.

Highlands is scheduled to play in the Uncle Pete Invitational at Taylor Mill’s Softball City starting today. The Bluebirds face Dixie Heights at 7:30 p.m. and Conner at 9 p.m.

Newport Central Catholic is scheduled to play at in-town rival Newport on Monday. Game time is 5 p.m.

More postponements

Another cold winter day meant no action once again for the Highlands Bluebirds softball team.

The Bluebirds were scheduled to take on Ludlow to open the season Monday then travel to Cooper on Tuesday. Both games have been postponed. The next scheduled game for Highlands is Thursday at Dayton at 5 p.m.

The Highlands baseball team was to face Holmes on Tuesday. That game will also not be played. The Bluebirds travel to Conner for a 5 p.m. game today.

The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds softball team was also scheduled to open against Bellevue. That game was also postponed. NewCath is scheduled to travel to Scott for a 5 p.m. contest today.
