Saturday Highlands Results

The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team (26-9) soundly advanced to the 36th District championship game with a three-inning 18-0 win over the Newport Wildcats in the semifinals.

Highlands Softball Downs Dixie Heights

The Highlands Bluebirds softball team (13-8 overall) avenged an early-season loss to the Dixie Heights Lady Colonels with a 7-4 win in Crescent Spring on Friday.

Highlands Softball Edges Notre Dame

The Highlands Bluebirds softball team edged the Notre Dame Pandas, 5-4 on Thursday at Winkler Field in a 9th Region victory.

Highlands (12-8) scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Bluebirds moved to 7-3 in region play.

The Highlands Bluebirds softball team salvaged a win in the John Sosby Classic at Bourbon County on Saturday.

Highlands is 11-8 on the season. The Bluebirds stopped a three-game losing streak with the win.

The Highlands Bluebirds softball team (8-5 overall) rebounded from its Monday loss with a five-inning 12-2 win over the Dayton Lady Devils (7-7). Highlands is 3-0 in 36th District play with the win.

Highlands Softball Wins Again

The Highlands Bluebirds softball team (7-4 overall) recorded its second shutout of the season and fourth run-ruling with a convincing 11-0 win over the Bellevue Tigers in five innings on Friday.

Highlands has won six straight and moved to 2-0 in 36th District play. The Bluebirds are 3-2 in 9th Region play.

Highlands Softball Rises Above .500

Bluebirds Put up 10 Hits Against Tigers

For the first time this season, the Highlands Bluebirds softball team (5-4 overall) moved above .500 on the season with a 6-0 win over the Loveland (Ohio) Tigers (3-14) from the East Cincinnati Conference.

Highlands has won four in a row with the first shutout of the season Tuesday. The Bluebirds moved to 2-1 against Ohio opponents.

Softball, Baseball Games Cancelled

The Highlands Bluebirds softball team (3-4 overall) had a home game scheduled against Middletown (Ohio). The Middies were 7-10 entering the game.

Highlands takes on Pendleton County on Monday. Game time is 5:30 p.m. at Winkler Field.

The Highlands baseball team (14-4) had a game against Louisville St. Xavier at Highland Park cancelled on Saturday. Highlands plays NewCath on Monday at 5 p.m.

Bluebirds Win 36th District Battles

For the second straight day, the balls erupted off the bats of the Highlands Bluebirds softball team.

Highlands (3-4 overall) batted .476 (10-for-21) scoring eight runs in the first inning and run-ruling the 6-9 Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds, 13-3 at Winkler Field. It marked the first 36th District game for the Bluebirds this year.

"It's big for us. As I've mentioned, we're just starting to come around with the bats," said Rob Coffey, Highlands Head Coach. "To keep that rolling and keep that consistent is our message. The girls have really bought into putting the ball in play. They're reaping the benefits now. It makes the game fun, too."

Highlands Softball Falls to Ohio Opponent

The Highlands Bluebirds softball team (1-3 overall) lost its first game back from Spring Break on Tuesday.

The Ursuline Academy Lions from the Girls Greater Catholic League held on for an 8-7 victory at Winkler Field. Ursuline moved to 6-3 on the season.

Saturday Cancellations

The Highlands Bluebirds softball team (1-2 overall) had two games scheduled Saturday at Tates Creek against Rockcastle County and Bedford (Indiana) North Lawrence.

But excessive rain in Lexington forced the cancellation of the games. Highlands does not play again until Tuesday, April 9 against Cincinnati Ursuline. Game time is 5 p.m.

Tight Battle for Highlands to Open Region Tournament

Bluebirds Etch Out Close Win over Lady Rebels

Facing arguably the best pitcher in the 9th Region in senior Olivia Jackson, the Highlands Bluebirds softball players knew they had to match the Boone County Lady Rebels (15-12 overall) stride-for-stride defensively because runs could be at a premium.

Highlands (19-10) took a 1-0 lead into the top of the seventh inning, lost it, but found a way to scratch one across in the bottom of the 10th to pull off a 2-1 victory in the 9th Region quarterfinals at Veterans Memorial Park in Newport on Monday.

Region Tournament Draws Go Fine For Bluebird Baseball, Softball

Teams always know they will face one of three teams going into the 9th Region draws.

But based on records, match-ups among other teams, teams hope to receive the best possibility of advancing past the region quarterfinals. On Saturday, the Highlands baseball team received a good draw and the softball team did not receive the best draw, but it may be a good thing. Both teams drew the latest start time Memorial Day.

Bluebird Baseball, Softball Claim Crowns in Different Ways

Both Blue and White squads smashed their way into the district championship games.

It turned into a matter of the heavily favored Highlands Bluebirds baseball and softball teams bringing home more 36th District gold trophies and earning the best possible seeds in the 9th Region Quarterfinals on Thursday. Both teams did it in two completely different fashions bringing the total to six district championships out of the the seven 36th District sports for the most in an academic calendar year since the soccer teams went to that format starting in 2012-13.

Bluebirds Softball Completes 4-0 Run in 36th District Seed Play

The Highlands Bluebirds softball team finished up the regular season on a positive note with four straight wins.

Highlands (16-10 overall) took care of the Dayton Lady Devils, 12-2 in five innings earning a convincing top seed in the 36th District at 4-0 in seed play. Highlands outscored the four district opponents, 49-5. The Bluebirds also finished 11-1 in 9th Region action.

Highlands Handle Struggling Conner

Bluebirds Beat Lady Cougars in Rematch

It marked the second time this season these two teams faced off.

But the result did not change much as the Highlands Bluebirds softball team (14-10 overall) handled the host Conner Lady Cougars, 12-5 in Hebron on Monday. Highlands also beat Conner (2-14) by an 8-2 count in Fort Thomas on April 11. Highlands led 6-0 after two innings and cruised to the win.

For the second straight game, the Highlands Bluebirds softball team started its nine seniors.

Highlands (12-8 overall) may not have played as well. But the Bluebirds recorded another crucial 36th District win, 11-1 over Bellevue in five innings at Winkler Field. Highlands moved to 3-0 in district play.
