Bluebirds Post Convincing Region Win

The Highlands Bluebirds girls soccer team (11-1-5 overall) recorded another impressive 9th Region victory.

Highlands pulled away from the Covington Holy Cross Lady Indians, 5-1 at Eva G. Farris Sports Complex/John Wysong Field in Covington. Highlands moved to 7-1-1 against region opponents.

The Highlands Bluebirds softball team (3-2 overall) had not played in a week.

But Highlands made sure it did not hurt them too much in a 9th Region game. The Bluebirds took down the Covington Holy Cross Lady Indians, 13-0 in five innings.

The Highlands Bluebirds basketball team started the big week Tuesday with a trip down US 27.

Awaiting them in Alexandria stood the Campbell County Camels (17-1 overall) ranked eighth in the latest Associated Press poll. While the Bluebirds (9-10) have come a long way this season, the 83-60 loss to Campbell County showed them what needs to happen to battle the elite teams in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Highlands one-hits way into 9th semifinals

NEWPORT - When the ball does not leave the infield, the chances of winning the softball game skyrocket.

The Highlands Ladybirds softball team (22-10 overall) played that well defensively in the 9-0 win over the Covington Holy Cross Lady Indians (14-14) on Monday in the 9th Region quarterfinals at Veterans Field. Highlands senior pitcher Bailey Spencer struck out 10 in the one-hit win and Highlands player error-free defense behind her. Highlands moved to 16-0 against the region this season.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS – The Highlands Ladybirds softball team hope to be in this position more down the road.

Highands (24-11) came into Monday’s 9th Region quarterfinal tournament as heavy favorites against the Covington Holy Cross Lady Indians (13-20). They showed it by run-ruling the visitors, 14-0 in five innings to advance to the semifinals for the second straight year and third time since 2008.

ERLANGER – Some may call it the Newport Central Catholic Invitational.

It is understandable because the Thoroughbreds have won the previous seven All “A” 9th Region girls basketball crowns. But one region opponent has not been intimidated by that in recent years in the Covington Holy Cross Lady Indians (11-4).

Holy Cross gave NewCath its closest game in last year’s tournament losing just 51-43 in the first round. It took the Thoroughbreds (16-2) the final seconds of this year’s semifinal contest Friday to beat the Lady Indians, 39-37 at St. Henry.

It may take some time for certain aspects to really gel with this young girls basketball team.

But the Highlands Bluebirds took care of the determined Covington Holy Cross Lady Indians, 43-39 on Tuesday in Fort Thomas. Highlands won the overtime battle, 10-6 to pull out the 9th Region win. Both teams are 2-1 on the season.

Lady Breds shut out Lady Indians

The Newport Central Catholic Lady Breds soccer team won its third straight with a 3-0 shutout of the host Covington Holy Cross Lady Indians on Wednesday at Farris Park.

NewCath (4-1) has shut out three straight opponents by a combined 9-0. Goalkeeper Meg Martin had to save just one shot for the Lady Breds.

Freshman forward Taylor Tolle led NewCath with two goals to up her total to five scores in two games. Teammate Allie Otten scored the other goal for the Lady Breds.

NewCath plays at St. Henry on Saturday. Game time is 7 p.m.
