The Highlands Bluebirds softball team (10-7 overall) dropped a tight 5-4 decision at Campbell County on Wednesday.

Ladybirds snap losing skid with in-county road win

ALEXANDRIA - The visitors took the court totally aware of the gut check moment.

The Highlands Ladybirds came into the game at Campbell County Middle School on its first two-game losing streak of the season and wanted to put an end to it. Behind a combination of challenging defense and nice offensive execution, Highlands finished the first half on a 10-0 run and held on for a 55-46 non-region victory over the Campbell County Lady Camels on Saturday.

Ladybirds continue to roll

The depth again showed its value for the Highlands Ladybirds soccer team.

Highlands rotated 22 players in and out and it helped beat the Campbell County Lady Camels, 6-0 Monday at Tower Park. Highlands stayed undefeated at 5-0 and has outscored the opposition, 16-0 as junior goalkeeper Olivia McQueary recorded her fifth shutout of the season. Defenders Karolyn Lukjan, Parker Price, Hannah Hartman and Hannah Gish pitched in on that effort.

Ladybirds capture first win of season

Monday Sports Briefs

The Highlands Bluebirds girls soccer team (1-0-2) tied the host Campbell County Lady Camels, 2-2 on Monday.

Taylor Vaughn scored the first goal for Highlands in the first half before Kelsey Etherton scored the second. Kristin Venneman and Kayla Nehus tallied assists.

Campbell County only took shots. Highlands goalkeeper Sarah Owen saved two of them.

The Bluebirds play host to the rival and 2012 runner-up Notre Dame Pandas on Thursday. Game time is 8 p.m.

Girls Soccer:
Ryle 1, Newport Central Catholic 0:

The Thoroughbreds (1-1) lost in Union on Monday.

Freshman Meg Martin is playing goalkeeper this year. She made five saves for NewCath.

The Thoroughbreds play at Covington Holy Cross in the All “A” 9th Region semifinals on Wednesday against Villa Madonna. Game time is 5 p.m.

Volleyball:
Scott 2, Highlands 1:

The visiting Lady Eagles edged the Bluebirds, 2-1 (18-25, 25-19, 25-17) on Monday.

Kaitlin Hall and Jessica Ginter led Highlands in every statistical category. The Bluebirds (0-3) are still looking for their first win of the year.

Highlands will try for it again Tuesday. The Bluebirds travel to Kings (Ohio) for a 7 p.m. contest.

Debut Delayed

The Highlands Bluebirds softball team was supposed to play Campbell County at home to open the season Wednesday.

Excessive cold and snow forced a cancellation of the game. No make-up date has been scheduled at this time.

Thus, the debut of new head coach Rob Coffey has been delayed until Monday. Highlands plays host to Ludlow at 5 p.m.
