PHOTO: G. Michael Graham, Fort Thomas Matters. The Highlands girls basketball team lost its season-opening game Thursday.

The Highlands Bluebirds girls basketball team opened the season with a rough 62-22 defeat on the 9th Region road against the Dixie Heights Colonels (1-1 overall).

Freshman post Marissa Green led Highlands with eight points. Senior center CC Shick followed with six. They are the only two of 11 Bluebirds who saw action in the game that came into the season with any varsity experience.

The Bluebirds made just 9-of-31 shots for 29 percent including just 1-of-9 from three-point range for 11 percent. Highlands also made just 3-of-5 free throws for 60 percent.

Highlands recorded 22 rebounds. Green and Shick led the way with seven each.

Dixie Heights displayed balanced scoring with three in double figures. Senior Madelyn Lawson led the way with 18 points. Juniors Samantha Berman followed with 12 and Reese Smith scored 11.

The Colonels made 24-of-44 shots for 55 percent including 9-of-19 three-point tries for 47 percent and 5-of-9 free throws for 56 percent. Dixie Heights also nabbed 21 rebounds.

Highlands travels to Cooper (1-0) on Friday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The Highlands Bluebirds football team (5-5 overall) does not know who the opponent will be in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.

The Bluebirds created doubt in that regard after a 35-7 win against the Cooper Jaguars (6-3) on Friday. The only thing decided is Covington Catholic (6-3) will again be the top seed after another 4-0 run through the current District 5 alignment. The Colonels finished off the run with a 27-7 win over Conner.

Highlands, Cooper and Conner finished 2-2 in district play going 1-1 against each other. That means the Ratings Percentage Index will decide the seedings for the playoffs.

"That math is way over my head. I'm a high school football coach," said Bob Sphire, Highlands Head Coach. "You have to play the same teams over. Who gives a hoot whether you play them the first week, second week or whether you play them home or away? We've played equally or maybe even better on the road than we have at home. We just have to be ready to come play football like we did (Friday)."

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association said the RPI is way to compare a team's relative strength to others based on their strength of schedule. It is calculated from the team's Winning Percentage (WP), the Opponent's Winning Percentage (OWP) and the winning percentage of opponents of teams they have played (OOWP).

Sphire pointed out the win over Cooper brought the Bluebirds a lot of RPI points. The Jaguars have a winning percentage of .667 based on six wins divided by nine games played.

The X-factor is Highlands and Cooper have played one out-of-state opponent each and Conner has played none. Out-of-state opponents have different values than in-state opponents do. That hurt Highlands last year in terms of having to go to Conner for the first round of the playoffs compared to playing at home after a loss to Cincinnati (Ohio) Moeller. Highlands lost 27-21 at Cincinnati (Ohio) McNicholas on Sept. 10 and Cooper defeated Madison (Indiana) on the road, 51-19 on Oct. 1.

Highlands finished 1-3 at David Cecil Memorial Stadium and 4-2 in games not played there. That included a 21-18 win over Bowling Green at the neutral Western Kentucky University to open the season Aug. 21.

The Bluebirds have their bye week the last week of the regular season entering the playoffs. But things will be settled after the other four district opponents play non-district games this Friday. Cooper hits the road to play Louisville Butler and Conner plays host to George Rogers Clark. Covington Catholic plays host to Ryle and Boone County travels to Tates Creek.

Highlands is currently slated to travel to Covington Catholic for the first round of the playoffs with a .51791 winning percentage as the fourth seed. But Conner is one spot ahead of Highlands with a .52033 percentage. Cooper is second with a .56239 percentage.

9th Region Volleyball Pairings:

Highlands (28-7 overall) will have to overcome a huge challenge to advance in the 9th Region Tournament on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Conner. The Bluebirds lost twice to the Lady Jaguars (21-11) during the regular season and have lost 15 straight against Cooper.

Highlands has one win in school history against Cooper. It came in a 2-1 (25-17, 17-25, 15-13) win on Sept. 19, 2009. Cooper opened in 2008.

The Bluebirds won their fifth consecutive 36th District championship on Wednesday. They are 12-7 against region opponents overall including a 4-6 record against teams in the 9th Region Tournament. The winner faces either St. Henry or Covington Holy Cross on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

The Highlands Bluebirds girls soccer team (11-4-1 overall) had one last tune-up for the postseason and came away with a 3-2 home win over the county rival Bishop Brossart Lady 'Stangs (12-7-1).

"It's fantastic for these girls," said Chris Norris, Highlands Head Coach. "We've played some tough teams this season and had some tough results. But this last week or so, they're just playing really, really good soccer. It was nice to get three goals in and give us a chance to try out a couple different formations as we head districts. We got some more players in. As many players as we can get experience, it's fantastic for this team. We're really coming together."

Highlands took 20 shots on goal to six for Bishop Brossart. Senior Hailey Parks had three saves at goalkeeper for the Bluebirds and senior Meg Gessner had three. The Bluebirds had seven corner kicks to two for the visitors.

Highlands sophomore forward Laney Smith scored her 15th goal of the season off an assist from sophomore forward Claire Cavacini to put the Bluebirds up 1-0 15 minutes into the game. Cavacini has four assists on the season.

Senior midfielder Faith Broering gave Highlands a 2-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the half on a penalty kick. She has nine goals this year.

The Bluebirds went ahead 3-1 after Smith second goal and 16th on the season. Senior defender Jade Rehberger recorded her ninth assist of the year.

Highlands received some good news. Junior defender Bianca Hemsath said she will return for the 9th Region Tournament. She has not been able to play since early in the year.

"I'm really excited. Just being a part of this team is awesome," Hemsath said. "Obviously, I'm very lucky that the coaches let me participate actively when I was injured on the sideline as a manager and keeping the stats. It's really wonderful being out there and playing some of your best friends."

The Bluebirds play in the title game of the 36th District Tournament on Wednesday at Morsher Field in Silver Grove. Game time is 5 p.m.

The Highlands Bluebirds boys soccer team (15-3-1 overall) helped Head Coach Chad Niedert to his 100th career coaching win with a 4-0 road victory at Cincinnati (Ohio) Winton Woods.

Niedert is in his fifth season at Highlands as the head coach and seventh overall after serving as an assistant in 2015 and 2016. The Bluebirds are 80-22-10 during Niedert's tenure as head coach.

Niedert led North Oldham to a 20-5-1 mark in 2013. Highlands has won the 36th District Tournament title five straight years and won the 9th Region title in 2018 and 2019 finishing state runner-up in 2018.

Highlands outshot the Warriors (4-5-1) of the Eastern Cincinnati Conference, 17-4 on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Jack Wilson stopped all four Winton Woods shots for the Bluebirds.

"(Winton Woods) came recommended to us from some of our colleagues over there in Ohio," Niedert said. "It was a different kind of game. It was definitely quite physical. They were a very athletic team. We have to learn how to play against really talented players that are different kinds of contributors. I think we did a good job."

The Bluebirds built a 3-0 halftime lead. Senior Jordan Frisk had two goals with junior Caden Schroeder scoring the other one and junior Colin Pieper tallying the assist. Frisk has 14 goals and a team-high nine assists on the season for a team-high 37 points. Schroeder has eight goals and Pieper has eight assists. Pieper has a team-high 38 points.

The Bluebirds added one goal in the second half. Junior Dash Macke passed the ball from the right side and sophomore Tyler Whitney played it in at the far left post. That is Macke's second assist of the season and Whitney's first goal.

"It actually felt amazing to be able to help one of my teammates find a shot in that spotlight," Macke said. "To see my friends celebrate after that goal is an accomplishment in and of itself. We have been playing phenomenal lately."

Highlands travels to Cincinnati (Ohio) Wyoming (8-1-1) of the Cincinnati Hills League on Thursday. Game time is 7 p.m.

Soccer, Girls:
Highlands 6, St. Henry 3:

Highlands (10-4 overall) celebrated Senior Night with a 9th Region win over the Crusaders (2-10-3). But the Bluebirds had to pull away with three goals in the game's final 18 minutes to do it.

"It was fantastic. (The seniors) got some playing time," said Chris Norris, Highlands Head Coach. "In the second half, we knew we had to move the ball a little bit faster. It worked out. I think it created a little bit more opportunities for us to get better scoring opportunities so when we were taking our shots, we'd be able to be on frame without having to get by four defenders. I think the girls' mental toughness has improved all season. I think it showed when they got down by a goal. It showed they could fight back."

The Bluebirds have 10 seniors in Meg Gessner, Hailey Parks, Faith Broering, Jade Rehberger, Chloe Bramble, Lucy New, Hailey Barton, Julia Heck, Macy Hedenberg and Lindsay Thompson. New, Thompson and junior Ruby Smith returned to soccer this year for the first time since middle school and are still members of the Highlands Dance Team.

"It was awesome," New said. "The team just has great chemistry. I got lots of minutes. I almost got a goal in there a couple times. But it was great to just be with the team. They're all so supportive and it's just the best team that I could ask for."

St. Henry battled the hosts despite Highlands outshooting the Crusaders, 22-9. Gessner had to make some tough saves in the second half finishing with five and Parks had one. That includes fighting off defenders in the box.

"We just had to work together as a unit always communicating with each other, connecting passes first, looking to go forward and never giving up balls," Gessner said. "It was great. You just have to have the mentality to go into it and always know you're going to get the ball."

Broering scored two goals in the first half for the Bluebirds and added an assist in the second half. She has eight goals and four assists on the season for 20 points.

Highlands took the lead again when Rehberger hit a penalty kick for her third goal of the season. The Bluebirds held the 3-2 lead momentarily as St. Henry quicly tied the game.

"We've rotated two freshmen, a sophomore through our defense trying to figure out what's going to be the right mix," Norris said. "I think losing (junior) Bianca Hemsath hurt us at least on the experience level. I think about that time Macy Hedenberg came back and that's really helped our center backs. That gives us a little bit more time on the outside. It's been a season-long project. I think they've done a fantastic job coming together both mentally and physically out on the field. Giving up three goals was a bit of a bummer. But I think maybe the Senior Night and some nerves of new players starting in some positions may have led to some miscommunications and some easy opportunities for St. Henry."

Sophomore forward Laney Smith had the next two goals. The first one came off a corner from Broering and the second one came on a 20-yard shot off a pass from senior forward Chloe Bramble. Bramble then scored on an assist from sophomore forward Lindsay Stein with seven minutes left in the game when the ball fell through the St. Henry goalkeeper's hands.

"That's something we've been working on all season - following the ball as soon as the ball is hit," Norris said. "I think they finally learned why we do it. It bounced our way and gave us an opportunity to score another goal."

Highlands plays host to Simon Kenton (7-9-1) on Wednesday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Golf, Girls:
8th Region Results:

Senior KJ Toole is headed back to the state tournament for the third year in a row for Highlands. She qualified for state finishing fourth in the 8th Region Tournament shooting an 85.

"I'm obviously excited to give myself another shot at (state)," Toole said. "That always feels good. I have a mix of emotions (Monday). My game was not bad. But it wasn't great so I definitely have some things to practice and get in line."

The Bluebirds finished third overall in the 14-team tournament played at Pendleton Hills Country Club in Butler shooting a 420 equaling the 2019 team for the highest finish in region tournament action since Head Coach Mike Lipscomb took over the program in 2018. Owen County won the tournament shooting 348 and Grant County took second shooting 388.

"I really think we started to peek at the end of the year at the right time," Lipscomb said. "Our girls played a very difficult course. The greens were extremely fast. They had some very tough holes where you have to place the ball more. I would say the girls did a very good job of not losing their heads. They kept their focus throughout even though they weren't having their best days."

None of the other four golfers shot below 100. Senior Helen Halbauer shot her personal best. The other three golfers that participated in the tournament return next year in junior Aly Welch, sophomore Bailey Markus and freshman Jenna Richey. The team won the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference Division II crown last week.

The girls state golf tournament takes place Oct. 4 through 6 at the Bowling Green Country Club. Toole qualified for the second day of the tournament last year shooting an 84 on the par-72 course and 88 on the second day for a two-day total of 172 good for 58th. Toole hopes to go out improving on those scores.

"My putting was looking really solid so I'm hoping to keep up some good putting," Toole said. "I did well with my drives off the tee. I'm just looking really hit those greens on my approach shots. That's a big thing."

Head Coach Katelyn Sallee mentioned the possibility of facing the Holy Cross Indians for a second time in three days in the annual Cake Classic on Saturday.

That third meeting for the Highlands Bluebirds volleyball team (21-6 overall) carried the most weight in the form of the tournament championship. The Bluebirds came through with a 2-0 victory (25-21, 25-20) beating the Indians (16-5) for the first time this season.

This also marked the first win in six tries over a team ranked in the top five in the 9th Region. The Bluebirds won the Cake Classic for the first time since 2017.

"It was exciting for them to have the opportunity to play them again so quickly," said Katelyn Sallee, Highlands Head Coach. "Volleyball is a hard game to have that kind of consistency and that type of control and competitiveness to carry on from the same opponent from one match to the next. To see us sustain the same energy from Thursday and come in clear-minded, focused and engaged was really good. I feel like we're so evenly matched."

Highlands had a .148 hitting percentage in the win connecting for 24 kills on 81 attempts and 12 errors. Senior left CC Shick had eight kills and senior Sophia Sarakatsannis had seven. Senior Nicole Ossege had four.

The Bluebirds had four aces, no blocks, 51 digs and 24 assists. Senior Madison Clore had two aces and nine digs. Senior Honor Valentine and Sarakatsannis had 11 each with Shick digging up 10. Senior setter Madison Opitz had 23 assists.

"We definitely wanted that win (Saturday)," Opitz said. "We worked together and gelled really well. We were excited throughout the whole game."

Valentine said the main person to contain for Holy Cross is sophomore middle hitter Julia Hunt. Her sister is junior setter Maya Hunt.

"For Julia, we really just tried to get some hands on (the ball)," Valentine said. "We took into account that she's going to have big swings and that's going to be okay. But we did as best as we can to try to get into a dig, dig, kill scenario. She's just a well-rounded player. She sees our side of the court and looks for holes."

Highlands finished pool play in the tournament with a 2-0 (25-12, 25-13) win over Walton-Verona an hour before the title game. This marked the second win over the Bearcats this season.

"The thing that I'm most encouraged by is that while on paper, Thursday was a loss," Sallee said. "I think emotionally, we just didn't wear that as hard as we could have. We came back and said we're going to take care of business. We believed we could do it. Instead of coming in hardened and just coming in with a vengeance because that can be short-sighted, I think we came in the mind that said we can beat this team (Holy Cross). We know this team really well. It was a mature way to head into this match."

Highlands had 20 kills and assists, one solo block each from senior Lauren Buemi and Shick, 22 digs and nine aces. Shick had 10 kills and Sarakatsannis had six kills, seven digs and two aces. Opitz had 14 assists, four digs and four aces. Clore had five digs and an ace with Valentine recording two aces.

Highlands plays host to Simon Kenton on Tuesday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Soccer, Girls:
South Oldham 4, Highlands 0:

The state's second-ranked Lady Dragons (15-1) downed the visiting Bluebirds (9-4). This marked South Oldham's 10th shutout of the season. Their lone loss came 3-0 at home to top-ranked Notre Dame (18-0).

South Oldham had 12 shots compared to nine for Highlands. Senior goalkeeper Hailey Parks had eight saves for the Bluebirds.

The Highlands Boys soccer team (14-3-1 overall) needed one more win on Senior Night to conclude the regular season undefeated in 9th Region action.

Tied 1-1 at halftime, the Bluebirds outscored the Dixie Heights Colonels (10-3-1), 3-0 in the second half on their way to a 4-1 victory. Highlands finished the regular season 9-0 in region play.

"We've talked about not taking things for granted," said Chad Niedert, Highlands Head Coach. "They're realizing we do a lot for this program and it means a lot to us. We owed it to the seniors for what they've contributed to the program to make it the night that it was. I think we saw great contributions from our seniors, juniors and two sophomores. The energy was great and we had some great support from the student section. If this is where we pick up in the postseason, we're going to be in great shape going forward."

The Bluebirds have eight seniors on the team. They are Cole Lorenzen, Jordan Frisk, Joel Kendall, Nick Robinson, Sawyer Tate, Thomas Gray-Torsell and Wyatt Thompson.

"Our strongest part of our season so far has been starting the second half," Robinson said. "We started the second half strong and we never really looked back. Normally when we get ahead like that, we just keep pushing until (opponents) pretty much give up. The seniors deserve it."

Highlands had 23 shots including 12 on goal to go with two offsides calls, four fouls and seven corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Jack Wilson had five saves.

Frisk, junior Colin Pieper and sophomore Chad Gesenhues had one goal and one assist each. Lorenzen had the fourth goal. Pieper has a team-high 15 goals and seven assists for a team-high 37 points. Frisk has 12 goals and a team-high nine assists for 33 points. Gesenhues has seven goals and four assists for 18 points and Lorenzen has four goals on the season.

Highlands travels to Cincinnati Winton Woods on Monday. Game time is 7 p.m.

Volleyball:
Covington Holy Cross 3, Highlands 2:

Tied at 15 in the final game, Holy Cross (14-4) scored on a tight call along the sideline and a Highlands hitting error to win the game. The Indians won the first game 25-20 before the Bluebirds won the next two 25-16 and 25-20.

"It was without a doubt I feel like the proudest moment I've had this season watching the girls rally and fight and do every single thing I asked of them," said Katelyn Sallee, Highlands Head Coach. "It came down to two points. It was just an incredible match. I told them at the end with tears in my eyes and the whole team feeling it, 'When people ask me how the season is going, I very rarely say the record because there are other measurable things that I really point to.' Nights like this, I can proudly say it's going well. I'm super bummed that we didn't get to take the W, but really proud of the team."

But Highlands could not find a rhythm in the fourth game. Holy Cross built a big lead and won 25-20.

"You have to just jump on top of it and get ahead," Sallee said. "You can't give this team an inch. We didn't give them much really. But we didn't close the door. We just had the one little run that we allowed. When you give (that), they're going to make you pay for it."

The Bluebirds had 50 kills, 49 assists, five solo and four assisted blocks, 92 digs and 11 aces. Senior CC Shick had 21 kills, one solo and one assisted block and 10 digs. Senior Sophia Sarakatsannis had 12 kills, 22 digs and three aces. Junior Emma Daly had two solo blocks. Senior Lauren Buemi had five digs, three aces and four kills.

Highlands senior setter Madison Opitz had 42 assists. Senior Honor Valentine and Madison Clore had 20 and 19 digs.

The Bluebirds honored the passing of Clore's grandmother Sandy Clore-Schmaedecke earlier in the week by wearing pink ribbons on their shoes. She'd been battling cancer for months. Clore said not playing Thursday did not cross her mind and Schmaedecke would not want her to do that.

"I'm very thankful she got to watch me. She's a role model for me and I love her very much," Clore said. "I'm going to miss her. I was playing for her (Thursday) and so was the team."

Clore's sister Rylee plays on the freshman team. Rylee Clore thanked her grandmother.

"She was there for me through thick and thin," Rylee Clore said. "She was so inspirational throughout her years. I would just like to say she has been though so much. She has fought and she has shown her strength throughout (the) cancer (battle). I will miss her forever, especially on the court with my teammates. They showed how much we can come together. I just want to say thank you to her."

The Bluebirds play twice in the Cake Classic on Friday. They take on Bishop Brossart at 5:15 p.m. and South Oldham at 6:15 p.m.

The Highlands Bluebirds boys soccer team (10-3-1 overall) outlasted the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds (5-7-1), 4-2 at Morscher Field for its 11th straight win in the rivalry.

Highlands led 3-2 at halftime. The Bluebirds had 35 shots with 21 on goal compared to nine shots on goal for NewCath. Highlands had 11 fouls, one corner kick and four offsides calls.

"We were a little flat starting," said Chad Niedert, Highlands Head Coach. "NC scored both goals quickly. When you are playing on a grass field, it is a pretty small field. Goals are going to be scored. Our guys did a good job pushing through. In the second half frankly, (NewCath) was not super threatening. We had every bit of confidence at that point we were going to see the game out. We don't expect these games to be pretty. But we do expect the guys to get the results and that's exactly what we did."

The two Highlands goalkeepers again split halves. Junior Connor Mathis is had four saves in the first half and sophomore Jack Wilson had three in the second half.

Highlands junior forward Colin Pieper led the way scoring two goals and adding two assists for six points. Pieper has a team-high 10 goals and four assists for a team-high 24 points.

"Every time we play NC, it is always a tough battle, especially on their field," Pieper said. "Coming into the game, everyone was real excited. Emotions were high. But we did well to contain ourselves and play calm under pressure."

Senior forward/midfielder Jordan Frisk had one goal and an assist for three points. He has eight goals and a team-high six assists on the year for 14 points.

Junior midfielder Caden Schroeder had the other goal and sophomore forward/midfielder Chad Gesenhues had an assist. Schroeder has five goals and Gesenhues two assists on the season.

The Bluebirds play host to Campbell County on Thursday. Game time is 8 p.m.

Volleyball:
Highlands 3, Newport 0:

The Bluebirds (17-3) moved to 2-0 in 36th District play with the convincing road win.

"We like playing in that gym. But it often is quiet," said Katelyn Sallee, Highlands Head Coach. "It is good practice for us to stay in control with what we need to do and not count on anybody. We slowly did that in the first set. But in the second and third set, we were able to establish our own side of the net."

Highlands had 15 aces in the win to go with 30 assists and kills, two solo blocks from senior Lauren Buemi and 44 digs. Senior defensive specialist Madison Clore had 13 digs, four aces and three assists. Buemi and senior CC Shick led Highlands with nine kills each. Senior Sophia Sarakatsannis had eight digs and three aces.

The Bluebirds used both setters in the win as all 16 players saw action. Junior Kenzi Vennefron had 15 assists and four digs and senior Madison Opitz had 12 assists and six digs.

"We came in with high energy," said Emma Daly, Highlands junior of the team's depth. "It is definitely different. But we made the most of our opportunities."

PHOTO: G. Michael Graham, Fort Thomas Matters. Highlands senior Macy Hendenberg moves into position in a recent game.

The Highlands Bluebirds boys soccer team (9-3-1 overall) ventured into Ohio for the second time this week and third time this season and earned a huge 4-0 win.

Highlands took out the Walnut Hills Eagles (2-2-2) for the first win over an Ohio opponent this year. The Eagles tied Cincinnati St. Xavier, 1-1 on Sept. 7.

"This is a really big win for us frankly," said Chad Niedert, Highlands Head Coach. "We expected a great game and that's what we got. We kind of made a slight adjustment just on how to proceed tactically. We were very patient. We scored pretty early and we did a good job of never turning back. We kept after them, which hasn't always been the case. We kept pushing for more. Overall, I thought our entire team was much sharper than Thursday at Summit (Country Day). Our legs are back and we weren't so tired. It was a pretty good showing overall."

The Bluebirds had 21 shots with 12 on goal to three on goal for the Eagles. Highlands junior goalkeeper Connor Mathis had two saves and sophomore Jack Wilson made one.

"I just feel like we did a good job sticking together, playing as a team knowing when to push, when to stay back," Mathis said. "As long as we don't over-push and things like that, we're really strong together as a group."

Junior Colin Pieper had two goals and an assist for five points for Highlands. Pieper has a team-high eight goals and two assists for 18 points on the season.

Junior Caden Schroeder and senior Jordan Frisk had the other two goals. Schroeder has four goals this year and Frisk has seven. Frisk added his fifth assist this season.

Seniors Joel Kendall and Sam Jones added assists. Kendall has five assists and Jones has two.

The Bluebirds (6-2) forced an early ending to the game in the second half for the first time since beating Dayton, 11-0 in the first round of the 36th District Tournament on Oct. 7, 2019.

"I think the girls had three main goals. They wanted to have fun," said Chris Norris, Highlands Head Coach. "They wanted to keep the passes to one and two touches and they wanted to play quick. I think they put all three of those things together."

Sophomore forwards Laney Smith and Claire Cavacini led the Bluebirds with hat tricks of three goals and an assist for seven points each. Senior midfielder Faith Broering had one goal and two assists for four points. Smith has team-highs of eight goals and seven assists on the season for 23 points. Cavacini has seven goals and two assists for 16 points with Broering recording six goals and three assists for 15 points.

Junior forward Anna Melson along with seniors Jade Rehberger and Chloe Bramble had one goal and one assist each for three points. Senior Julia Heck and sophomore Lindsay Stein added their first assists of the year. Bramble has four goals and four assists for 12 points on the season. Rehberger has six assists. Melson has two goals and an assist on the season.

"I think the thing the starters and the senior noticed was the intensity never went down when the non-starters came in," said Macy Hedenberg, Highlands senior forward. "It was really good to see. We needed to keep a high intensity level coming off that (1-0) loss (Thursday) to East Central (Indiana). We kept going and just didn't stop."

Highlands Volleyball Handles NewCath

PHOTO: G. Michael Graham, Fort Thomas Matters. Highlands senior Jade Rehberger (19) and sophomore Lindsay Stein (13) get in position in a recent game.

The Highlands Bluebirds volleyball team (16-3) came into this rivalry game with a much better record.

But the Bluebirds did not give the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds (6-10) any hope dispatching them 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-11). Highlands has won seven of the last eight meetings.

"Over the last couple years, it's been good that they have been able to still keep that rivalry to a degree and not put too much energy to that because I think that just loads too much pressure into the match," said Katelyn Sallee, Highlands Head Coach. "Really, we kind of prepared for this match the way we did the rest of the season just really talking about our side of the net, talking how we handle us. Then as we see things come up, we deal with the opponent."

That lone loss came during the regular season last year. But NewCath graduated five players off that team including Madison McCloskey. Her younger sister Riley McCloskey transferred to defending state champion Notre Dame.

Highlands had 39 kills and assists, three solo blocks, 73 digs and 11 aces in the victory. Senior Sophia Sarakatsannis had 20 digs, six aces and a kill. Senior Honor Valentine had 13 digs and an ace and senior Madison Clore had 10 digs and an ace.

The solid serve reception allowed the setters to do their thing. Senior Madison Opitz had 25 assists and 11 digs with junior Kenzi Vennefron recording 14 assists and seven digs.

Senior CC Shick led Highlands with 18 kills and added five digs. Senior Avery Cavacini followed with seven kills and senior Nicole Ossege had six kills. Senior Lauren Buemi had five kills and two solo blocks.

"This is always going to be a big game to us," Buemi said. "Keeping calm is always our thing. Coach (Sallee) always says to play Highlands volleyball. To us, that means full effort all the time. Go for any ball. Just do as much as you can no matter what. Always look ahead, not behind."

The Bluebirds continue 36th District action Tuesday at Newport. Game time is 6 p.m.

Soccer, Girls:
East Central (Indiana) 1, Highlands 0:

The Bluebirds (5-2) could not penetrate the East Central back line in the loss.

Highlands managed seven shots with three on goal. East Central had seven shots on goal. Highlands senior goalkeepers Hailey Parks and Meg Gessner had two and four saves respectively.

The Bluebirds take on Eastern Brown from Sardinia, Ohio on Saturday. Game time is 6 p.m.

Soccer, Boys:

The Silver Knights (3-0-2) escaped with a win over the visiting Bluebirds (8-3-1).

Senior Jordan Frisk scored his sixth goal of the season for Highlands tying the team lead. Junior Peyton Helminiak had his fourth assist also tying for the team lead.

Highlands had seven shots on goal, 10 fouls, one corner kick and two yellow cards. Junior goalkeeper Connor Mathis had five saves and sophomore Jack Wilson had seven for the Bluebirds.

Highlands Soccer, Volleyball Teams Victorious

PHOTO: G. Michael Graham. Highlands sophomore forward Ava Meyer (13) and sophomore forward Lindsay Stein get (17) get in position in the win at Campbell County on Friday.

The rivalry week for the Highlands Bluebirds girls soccer team (5-1 overall) concluded with a nice road win.

Highlands ventured south to take on the county rival Campbell County Camels (7-3-1). The Bluebirds built a 5-1 lead and did not let it slip away in a 5-2 victory in a game featuring two head coaches with a common mentor early in their coaching careers. Chuck Norris mentored his son in Highlands Head Coach Chris Norris and Campbell County Head Coach Dave Morris years ago.

Highlands did better in a battle of ball-possession teams doubling the amount of shots against the Camel. The Bluebirds had 22 shots with 16 on goal to 11 shots and eight on goal for the hosts. Highlands won a lot of the 50/50 balls near midfield. Highlands midfielders such as seniors Julia Heck, Lucy New and sophomore Ava Meyer held strong there.

"It's pretty much a mentality thing just being first to the 50/50s that way we can just play it to our other teammates' feet," Heck said. "We've learned that it's really not about location. It's about who we're with and our team. We just push through no matter if it's grass or turf."

Highlands did commit eight fouls to four for Campbell County. But both teams had two corner kicks.

The Bluebirds knew they had to contain Campbell County junior forward Ruby Dunlevy. She scored two goals off two free kicks. Dunlevy has a team-high 15 goals and five assists for 35 points and has a school-record 41 career goals.

"We anticipated that it was going to be more long balls so we changed up our back four one more time because we wanted to add a bit more speed and I thought we were able to contain the long ball like that," Chris Norris said. "We kept forcing Dunlevy to the side and not letting her get into the middle. Her free kicks are fantastic. We mentioned that we can't foul anymore in the back 30. I'm glad that we shut her down for the most part in play."

Highlands did continue to play some young players in the defensive backfield because of injuries. But the likes of senior defender Jade Rehberger and freshmen Kate Fausz and Kendall Graves held their own back there.

Highlands senior goalkeeper Hailey Parks had five saves before junior goalkeeper Angelica Jackson came in late to make one. Campbell County junior goalkeeper Morgan Rawe had nine saves.

Highlands sophomore forward Laney Smith had a hand in all five goals in the victory. She scored on a corner kick and had four assists for six points. Smith has five goals and a team-high six assists on the season for a team-high 16 points. Smith and senior midfielder Faith Broering are tied for the team lead with five goals.

"We've been working on quick releases in the offensive third and allowing other players to get involved vs. always trying to rely on Faith and Laney," Chris Norris said. "They're amazing players in their own right. They're being hammered. We saw how many times Faith got hit in the middle of the field. We saw how often Laney had two players on her."

Smith found Broering for a score just four minutes, 13 seconds into the game. But after Dunlevy tied it less than a minute later, Smith found fellow sophomore forward Claire Cavacini for the score to put Highlands up 2-1 at halftime. Minutes before, Smith just missed a solid shot off the left post. Cavacini has four goals on the season.

"I think it gave us a lot of intensity and urgency to push us to want to score more and more," Cavacini said. "I think when we play (the ball) to feet, we play a whole different game and it benefits us 100 percent. I think it's a good win for us and it's going to push us to want to not get close games like (the 4-3 win at Newport Central Catholic on Wednesday) again."

The Bluebirds built the 5-1 lead in the first 20 minutes of the second half. Smith scored on a corner kick from Rehberger with 36:40 left in the game.

Senior forward Chloe Bramble scored twice with 24:24 and 20:02 left in the game. Bramble has three goals and three assists on the season for nine points.

"Chloe Bramble was finishing strong," Chris Norris said. "We can't do that without everybody getting involved. I think everybody's starting to learn their role a little bit more and they're starting to really support each other both offensively and defensively. You can see their confidence and communication growing. They have a great sense of team right now. So if we can just continue that mentality over the next month, I think we'll be a force to reckon with in October."

Dunlevy scored her second goal with 15:35 left in the game. But the Camels did not score again allowing Highlands to put in some reserves.

"It's very difficult to prepare for," Morris said of the Highlands scoring balance. "I watched them play on film and knew they had a turn, play long speed up top. It was going to be very difficult to contain them. I was hoping we'd do better. But we made a few mistakes in the back and gave up the two early goals. We had to be aggressive at midfield and contest every ball. That was our goal for the game. We had periods where we did that. As soon as we didn't do that, then they would get the ball all over the field. It made for a long day."

The Bluebirds take on East Central (Indiana) on Thursday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Soccer, Boys:
Highlands 2, Lexington Henry Clay 0:

The Bluebirds (7-2-1 overall) earned their first Saturday win of the season against a familiar opponent in the Blue Devils (5-5) in Lexington. This marked the third shutout of the season for Highlands.

"We like coming to Lexington for these trips," said Chad Niedert, Highlands Head Coach. "We hope that have multiple (trips to Lexington) because it's a good sign of a deep postseason run. It's a little bit different when you have these long trips in getting game ready when you get in the lull in an hour and a half-plus drive. But we came out and started well. We played really well. We've been working on various things like individual and team defending things. A lot of that translated well with what we did (Saturday)."

Highlands had 16 shots with 13 on goal to five shots on goal for Henry Clay. Junior goalkeeper Connor Mathis had three saves and sophomore Jack Wilson had two.

Highlands junior midfielder Caden Schroeder scored an olympico goal directly off a corner kick in the first half. That marked his third of the season.

"We've been pretty solid on our set pieces," Niedert said. "The wind was quite extensive. We don't normally get a lot of wind at our field (Tower Park). In the first half, we had the wind at our backs going straight toward Henry Clay's goal. We hit the right spot and got a goal from it."

The Bluebirds added a goal in the second half. Junior defender Luke Fedders threw the ball in to senior midfielder/forward Jordan Frisk. Frisk took a touch in the middle and scored for his fifth goal of the season.

Highlands last played Henry Clay in the state quarterfinals at Tower Park on Oct. 26, 2019. The Blue Devils won 2-1 (4-3 on penalty kicks) on their way to the state championship.

"We all that it was a good feeling to come back and beat them after they knocked us out of the state tournament," said Chad Gesenhues, Highlands sophomore forward/midfielder. "I think it's mostly going into headers and tackles fearless almost wanting to run through and win the ball then making a play out of it and not just hold onto it."

Highlands travels to Covington Catholic (1-4-5) on Tuesday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Volleyball:
Highlands Places Third at September Slam:

The Bluebirds (14-3 overall) hoped to play for the September Slam championship in the afternoon. But they had to settle for third after finishing 3-1 in pool play.

Highlands took down Dixie Heights, 2-0 (25-20, 25-18) before losing 2-0 to eventual tournament champion Covington Holy Cross, 2-0 (25-18, 25-18) in pool play. The Bluebirds took out Southwestern located in south central Pulaski County by a 2-1 score (17-25, 25-19, 15-7).

"I think we would have liked to have performed better against Holy Cross. Obviously that dropped us to this match," said Katelyn Sallee, Highlands Head Coach. "We didn't have the chance to fight for first place. But for us to come off a loss and finish strong was good. I'm pleased with that."

Highlands found its groove against Southwestern in the second and third games. Seniors Avery Cavacini and CC Shick dominated the nets. Shick had 12 kills and eight digs with Cavacini recording two kills, two solo blocks, one assisted block and four digs.

"As always, every aspect of the game is super important," Cavacini said. "But being consistent up at the net and being able to read the other team is vital to help our back row play."

The Bluebirds had 30 kills and assists, three solo and two assisted blocks, three aces and 51 digs against Southwestern. Senior Sophia Sarakatsannis had three kills, one ace, one assisted block and eight digs. The Bluebirds figured out Southwestern's tapping game in the second and third games.

"We've played a lot of volleyball this past week so we were trying to squeeze it out and I think we did that well," Shick said. "We just try to focus on grit and what's ahead of us - the next game and the next point all the time."

Junior setter Kenzie Vennefron had 24 assists and sophomore setter Madison Opitz had four. Senior defensive specialist Madison Clore had 13 digs with senior Honor Valentine recording seven.

Highlands had two aces, 19 kills and assists, one solo block and 35 digs against Holy Cross. Shick had nine kills, one solo block and six digs. Vennefron had two aces, 17 assists and six digs. Sarakatsannis had two kills and 10 digs.

The Bluebirds had three aces, 30 assists and kills, three solo blocks, two assisted blocks and 13 digs against Dixie Heights. Shick had 12 kills and eight digs. Vennefrom had 24 assists, four digs and one kill. Clore had 13 digs. Senior Lauren Buemi had six kills, one ace, one solo block, three digs and one assist. Sarakatsannis had eight digs, three kills, one solo, one assisted block and an ace.

Bluebirds Volleyball, Boys Soccer Defeat 9th Region Opponents

PHOTO: G. Michael Graham, Fort Thomas Matters. Highlands senior Madison Opitz gets in position in a recent game.

The Highlands Bluebirds volleyball team (10-2 overall) knew it would face a familiar 9th Region opponent several times this season after the two did not meet last year.

Round one belonged to the Bluebirds in convincing fashion. Highlands took care of the Dixie Heights Colonels (2-2), 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-13) in Fort Thomas. The Bluebirds moved to 2-2 against region opponents.

"Anytime you play someone you have a long-standing history with and take care of business like that quickly, it's a good sign of our mental fortitude and preparation for the game," said Katelyn Sallee, Highlands Head Coach. "I told the girls I don't think I have seen them firing on all cylinders like that all year. It all came together and it was a pretty fun night."

Highlands had 30 kills, 29 assists, five solo and four assisted blocks, 37 digs and 15 aces. Senior CC Shick led the way with 11 kills.

Senior Lauren Buemi had six kills, one solo block, two assisted blocks, five digs and six aces for the Bluebirds. Senior Sophia Sarakatsannis had six kills, one assisted block, six digs and five aces. Senior Nicole Ossege had four kills, one solo block and one dig.

Senior defensive specialist Honor Valentine led the Bluebirds with seven digs to go with two aces and two assists. Senior Madison Clore had six digs, one ace and one assist.

Highlands used both setters in the victory. Junior Kenzi Vennefron had 15 assists, six digs and once ace. Senior Madison Opitz had 10 assists and four digs.

"The team was very focused," Vennefron said. "I think Dixie is probably one of our biggest rivals so we really wanted to win. The team just really clicked."

Highlands focused on Dixie Heights junior Maia Long. Long led the Colonels with 27 kills after two matches.

"She's really talented. We just had a really incredible blocking and defensive night together," Sallee said. "Our serve-receive was just on point. Offensively, everyone did a really great job. Sophia took a ton of swings from the outside. Did great. Nicole did a great job. CC was pretty untouchable. They couldn't get her. It was fun to see the defense and offense come together like that."

Highlands takes on Boone County and Campbell County at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. respectively in the September Slam at Scott on Friday. The Bluebirds finish pool play against Dixie Heights and Covington Holy Cross on Saturday at 9 and 11 a.m.

Soccer, Boys:
Highlands 2, Cooper 1:

The Bluebirds (6-2-1) stayed undefeated in weekday games at 6-0 and moved to 5-0 against 9th Region opponents with the victory over the Jaguars (5-3-2).

"We feel like we finished out that first half pretty strong," said Chad Niedert, Highlands Head Coach. "We gave up a goal on a little bit of a slip-up. We felt that even though the score didn't indicate it, we were the better team in the first half. We were doing really well with connecting passes and building up from the back. It was hard for Cooper to have any idea where we were coming from. We put them on their heels. Our emphasis at halftime was to pick up where we left off because we were pretty sure we could get the job done. We got after it right away."

Highlands had 12 shots with four on goal to go with 12 fouls, one corner kick and a yellow card. Sophomore goalkeeper Jack Wilson saved all five shots on goal and junior Connor Mathis made one save.

"I think our defense took a step forward by just putting more pressure on Cooper," said Evan Jones, Highlands junior defender. "Our center backs did a good job stopping anything that went passed and our goalies had some really good saves. We just really stepped up our energy level in the second half to score two goals."

The Bluebirds trailed 1-0 at halftime. But junior forward Colin Pieper scored his team-high sixth goal of the season off a free kick to tie the game.

Highlands took the lead for good when senior Joel Kendall booted a free kick from midfield and senior Jordan Frisk finished it. That marked Frisk's fourth goal of the year and Kendall's third assist.

The Highlands Bluebirds volleyball team (8-2 overall) finished 5-1 in the Bluegrass Invitational in Lexington going 2-1 winning the silver championship.

Highlands ran into a 9th Region nemesis in the morning in the Cooper Lady Jaguars, 2-0. But the Bluebirds bounced back to beat 1st Region power McCracken County and Lexington Lafayette by 2-0 scores.

"I was pretty thrilled with how we bounced back (Saturday) morning," said Katelyn Sallee, Highlands Head Coach. "It was pretty rough against Cooper. I didn't feel like we represented who we are and what we can do. We'll get another crack at them later, which I'm looking forward to toward the end of the season. To play five matches in two days and finish strong, we sailed through the last match against McCracken."

The Bluebirds lost 25-10, 25-14 to Cooper to start the day. Both Highlands losses have come against teams from the 33rd District.

Highlands had 18 kills and assists along with 17 digs, no aces and no blocks. Seniors Lauren Buemi and CC Shick had four kills each and senior setter Madison Opitz had eight assists. Senior Sophia Sarakatsannis had seven digs and senior Madison Clore had four.

This marked the 14th straight loss to the Lady Jaguars, who also eliminated the Bluebirds in the 9th Region quarterfinals last year. Highlands last beat Cooper, 2-1 (25-17, 17-25, 15-13) on Sept. 19, 2009. Cooper opened in 2008.

Cooper is one of three teams that regularly makes it to the region tournament that Highlands has yet to defeat since Sallee became the head coach in 2014. The other two form the 9th Region "wall" in St. Henry and defending state champion Notre Dame.

"(Cooper) has definitely earned the right to be considered (near the) top of the region," Sallee said. "We want to be able to contend a little bit better than we did (Saturday) and I think we can so we're eager. A lot of it for us is about playing Highlands volleyball regardless of who is across the net. It's about not taking an opponent either for granted or giving too much credit to someone and being focused on what we can do."

Highlands beat the defending 1st Region champion McCracken County Lady Mustangs by 25-15, 25-14 scores. The Lady Mustangs lost to eventual state champion Notre Dame in the state quarterfinals last year.

Highlands had 23 assists and kills, five aces, three solo blocks, four assisted blocks and 38 digs. Opitz had 21 assists and seven digs.

Buemi had three aces, four kills, one solo, one assisted block and two digs. Shick had six kills and an assisted block. Sarakatsannis had seven kills, one ace and two digs. Senior Avery Cavancini had three kills, two digs, two solo and one assisted block.

Senior Honor Valentine led Highlands with 10 digs. Clore added five.

"I think that when we have good matches, it really energizes our team and we really feel confident going forward," Valentine said. "Our last two games were really good for our mentality. We just want to be better for each other."

The Bluebirds also defeated Lexington Lafayette by 25-23, 25-21 scores. Highlands had 24 kills and assists, three aces, two solo and four assisted blocks and 38 digs. Opitz led Highlands with 23 assists and had six digs.

Shick had nine kills, one assisted block and four digs for the Bluebirds. Buemi had four kills, one ace, one solo block, two assisted blocks and two digs. Sarakatsannis had three kills, one ace and 13 digs. Senior Nicole Ossege had five kills and one solo block. Valentine and Clore added six digs.

The Bluebirds play host to Walton-Verona on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.

Soccer, Girls:
Highlands 2, Lexington Lafayette 1:

The Bluebirds (3-0 overall) earned another tough road win.

"This was another good team win," said Chris Norris, Highlands Head Coach. "We moved the ball really well. We played in a slightly different formation that we came up with this week to combat some injuries that we have. The wheels are turning well now. As long as we're able to keep a few more people healthy for the next couple weeks, I think we're going to have a nice little run."

The Bluebirds had 12 shots to six for Lafayette. Highlands senior goalkeepers Meg Gessner and Hailey Parks split halves at goalkeeper. Gessner had three saves.

Highlands sophomore forward Laney Smith scored both goals for four points. Smith and senior midfielder Faith Broering lead the Bluebirds with three goals and six points each. Smith scored the game-winner with about four minutes left in the game. Smith said has played club soccer with some of the Lafayette players.

Senior defender Jade Rehberger and senior forward Chloe Bramble had the assists. Rehberger has a team-high four assists this year and Bramble has two.

"Our defense really stepped up," Smith said. "Jade Rehberger was playing the long balls out wide. They would just cross them in. We tried to get them off as fast as we could. We just couldn't get anything in. So the goal really meant a lot to me. I was knocking on the door the entire time. I'm proud that I scored the goal for the team."

Highlands faces its two biggest rivals in the 9th Region next in the Notre Dame Pandas (7-0) and Newport Central Catholic Throughbreds (5-1). The Bluebirds have won three straight against the Pandas.

"I think Monday's going to be tough no doubt about it," Norris said. "They've been thinking about this game for about a month now. I want them to play with that heart. I want them to play with that drive. I want them to play with that little chip on their shoulders. But then I also want them to remember we have to remain composed. I think (Saturday) helped. I think the game at Assumption helped. I think they know what they have to do. Now it's just going out there, executing and making it happen."

The Notre Dame game is Monday at 8 p.m. at Tower Park.

Soccer, Boys:
Cincinnati (Ohio) Elder 4, Highlands 0:

For the first time since 2018, the Highlands Bluebirds have started the season 2-0.

It last happened in 2018 and 2017. Those teams lost to Scott County in the third game. The 2018 team finished 10-3 losing to Covington Catholic in both the regular season and in the region title game.

The Bluebirds won their last of 23 state championships in 2014. That team started the season 6-0. The last time Highlands finished undefeated came in a 15-0 run in 2011.

The Highlands 3-4 defense knows it has a number of ways to improve going forward after giving up 596 yards against Simon Kenton. But the Bluebirds did record two turnovers moving to a plus-four in the takeaway/giveaway margin.

Highlands Head Coach Bob Sphire said the Bluebirds were behind in the weight room after the scrimmage against Louisville Male. The team had one practice day in pads last week because of the heat.

"That's not an excuse," Sphire said. "We have to find a way to get better at tackling. But (Simon Kenton) is really, really good."

The Highlands offense put up 600 yards of total offense against Simon Kenton including 196 on the ground. Highlands junior quarterback Charlie Noon is known for his scrambling abilities.

Highlands Offensive Coordinator Hayden Sphire said it is a matter of getting in the weight room and becoming more physical up front. Hayden Sphire credited junior Dawson Hosea for making hard, physical runs and taking care of the ball. The team will have a nice tandem in the backfield when senior Griffin Richter returns in a few weeks.

"We have a lot of improvement to do in the running game," Hayden Sphire said. "But I think we've gotten better."

"We didn't know who we were going to come out and see," said Katelyn Sallee, Highlands Head Coach. "Obviously, usually they're not teams we play often. We took care of business very quick against Henry Clay. I was very pleased with that. Logan (County) was very tough. They ran a very fast offense and had some very talented hitters. But we handled that defensively, figured out what we needed to do and were able to execute. It was great. We're excited."
