Wednesday Round-up: NewCath softball wins ninth straight; HHS baseball, softball win

The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team equaled last year's win total with an 18-0 five-inning run-ruling of the host Newport Wildcats on Wednesday.

Highlands moved to 22-7 on the season and 3-0 in 36th District seed play. The Bluebirds finished 22-18 last year and finished 9th Region runner-up.

Highlands takes on Covington Holy Cross in the Jim Connor Classic on Friday. The classic concludes on Saturday.

Softball:
Highlands 8, Campbell County 7:

The Ladybirds (13-7) won their fourth in a row in Alexandria. Both teams had 14 hits and three errors. Shelby Graybill homered for Highlands and Bailey Spencer picked up the win.

Highlands travels to Dixie Heights on Thursday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Newport Central Catholic 15, Cooper 0:

The Thoroughbreds (18-5) won their ninth in a row in four innings on Senior Night.

Kristen Schreiber hit two three-run home runs for NewCath and Haley Meyers hit a two-run bomb in the second inning. Meyers also threw a perfect game striking out nine.

NewCath travels to Notre Dame on Tuesday. Game time is 5 p.m.
