Friday Round-up: Ladybirds earn 20th win entering postseason

The Highlands Ladybirds softball team entered the postseason with a convincing win.

Highlands (20-8 overall) handled the Ryle Lady Raiders, 13-0 in five innings. The Ladybirds have won 12 of their last 13 games.

Highlands pounded out 13 hits in the win. Senior Whitney Quillen celebrated Senior Night going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in. Josie Daley and Haley Coffey also had two hits and an RBI each. Coffey added a double. Brennah Dutcher and Shelby Graybill homered and Bailey Spencer drove in two.

Spencer also dominated on the mound. She had five strikeouts, a walk and three hits.

Highlands opens the 36th District tournament on Wednesday as the second seed taking on third-seeded Newport. Game time is 5:30 p.m. at Winkler Field.

Baseball:
Campbell County 6, Newport Central Catholic 1:

The Thoroughbreds (13-18) dropped the last game of the regular season.

NewCath takes on host Bellevue on Tuesday in the 36th District semifinals. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

Tennis:
Laskey advances to semifinals:

Highlands senior Meredith Laskey moved into the girls singles semifinals of the state tournament. She defeated Graves County senior Emily Whitnell, 6-0, 6-1 in the round of 16 and McCracken County junior Taylor Sprouse, 6-3, 6-2. Laskey faces Lexington Sayre senior Madeline Rolph in the semifinals.

The Highlands doubles team of juniors Lauren Auteri and Lexi Herman beat Henry Clay seniors Elle Tsamas and Schuler Ravencraft, 6-4, 7-5. But Russell freshman Maci Ferguson and junior Kierstin Hensley beat them, 6-2, 6-1 in the state quarterfinals.

The tournament resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Cancellation:

The Highlands baseball team had its games rained out Friday and Saturday. The Bluebirds were to travel to Conner on Friday then to Louisville Trinity on Saturday.

Highlands (27-6) plays either Dayton or Newport on Wednesday in the 36th District semifinals at Bellevue. Game time is 5 p.m.

Softball:
Boone County 8, Newport Central Catholic 7:

The Thoroughbreds (19-8) fell on the road for their second straight loss.

NewCath plays either Dayton or Bellevue in the 36th semifinals Tuesday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
