Tuesday Round-up: Highlands softball begins tough week on good note

The Highlands Ladybirds softball team (18-7 overall) began the tough week with a 9-0 win over the visiting Bishop Brossart Lady Mustangs on Monday at Winkler Park.

Highlands has won nine in a row. The Ladybirds won 19 in a row on their way to the state tournament last year.

Highlands outhit Bishop Brossart, 11-1. Shelby Graybill put together another solid game going 3-for-4 with a home run, five runs batted in and two runs scored. Kara Fornash and Rachel Gabbard had two hits each with Haley Coffey doubling. Coffery and Fornash scored twice.

Ladybird pitcher Bailey Spencer threw another complete game. She struck out seven and walked none.

Highlands plays host to Conner on Wednesday. Game time is 5:30 p.m.

Softball:
Notre Dame 4, Newport Central Catholic 1:

The host Pandas snapped NewCath's winning steak at nine in a row. The Thoroughbreds are 18-6 on the season.

The Thoroughbreds had just three hits against Panda pitcher Katelyn Baker. The Pandas scored three runs in the sixth.

Walks hurt NewCath in this game. Notre Dame had six including four in the second inning.

NewCath plays host to Campbell County on Wednesday. Game time is 5 p.m.

Baseball:
Newport Central Catholic 4, Scott 3:

The Thoroughbreds (13-16) edged the visiting Eagles in non-region action.

The Thoroughbreds play at Boone County on Wednesday. Game time is 5 p.m.
