Tuesday Roundup: Laskey captures another region crown; Bluebird baseball rallies for win

The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team won its second battle in two days against 33rd District opponents.

Highlands (21-7 overall) ventured to Union and rallied past the Cooper Jaguars, 11-7. The Bluebirds have won two in a row and moved to 4-0 on the season against 33rd District opponents.

Alex Veneman (1-0) picked up the win in relief for Highlands. He allowed no runs, two hits and one walk.

Cooper outhit Highlands, 14-10. Veneman and Todd Ramey had two hits each including a double to lead the Bluebirds. Veneman also tripled.

The Bluebirds play at Newport on Wednesday. Game time is 7:15 p.m.

Baseball:
Covington Holy Cross 3, Newport Central Catholic 2:

The Thoroughbreds (10-14) dropped the home 9th Region contest.

NewCath travels to Ryle on Thursday. Game time is 5 p.m.

Softball:
Newport Central Catholic 11, St. Henry 6:

The Thoroughbreds (17-5) won their eighth in a row in a rematch at St. Henry.

Freshman Jaden Watts pitched a complete game for NewCath picking up the win. She started in place of sophomore Haley Meyers.

NewCath outhit St. Henry, 13-11. Casey Kohls led the Thoroughbreds going 3-for-5 with a double, triple and three runs batted in. Lexy Breen, Kennedy Bin and Lexie Potts had two hits each. Breen had two doubles.

The Thoroughbreds play host to Cooper on Wednesday. Game time is 5 p.m.

Tennis:
Laskey does it again:

Highlands senior Meredith Laskey captured another 10th Region Singles title at Tower Park. She has captured seven region crowns overall.
