The Highlands tennis teams saw an singles player and doubles team make it to the second day of state competition at the University of Kentucky.
Highlands senior Meredith Laskey entered the tournament as the second seed. She handled Grayson County senior Courtney Vincent, 6-0, 6-1 in the first round before beating Corbin junior Jaclyn Jewell, 6-0, 6-4 in the round of 32. Laskey takes on Graves County senior Emily Witnell in the third round. Singles matches begin around 8 a.m. today.
The Ladybird doubles team of juniors Lauren Auteri and Lexi Herman beat Corbin's Cora Stevens and Makayla Beecham, 6-1, 6-2 before taking out Lexington Catholic's Kiley Mair and Amanda Miller, 6-3, 6-3. Auteri and Herman face Henry Clay's Schuler Ravenscroft and Elle Tsamas today. Doubles matches begin at 10:30 a.m.
Highlands junior Sarah Hoffman lost in the first round to Sacred Heart senior Ashley Hammons, 6-3, 6-3. Sacred Heart won the girls team title last year.
On the boys side, Highlands senior Ben Emery won his first match against Grayson County eighth-grader Spencer Sharp, 6-0, 6-1. He then lost to Oneida Baptist sophomore Kei Kei Sumivolstein, 6-1, 6-0.
The Highlands doubles team of sixth-grader Peter Laskey and senior Max Freyburger lost in the first round to Shelby County's Josh Barry and Luke Dove. The scores were 6-1, 6-4.
Softball:
Dixie Heights 4, Newport Central Catholic 1:
The Thoroughbreds (19-7) fell on the 9th Region road.
Dixie Heights outhit Newport Central Catholic, 7-5. The Thoroughbreds scored their only run in the seventh inning when Loren Zimmerman doubled and Kennedy Bin singled her home.
NewCath travels to Boone County on Friday. Game time is 5 p.m.
