The Highlands boys basketball team started off the season with a convincing 87-58 9th Region victory over the Ryle Raiders at Russell Bridges Gym.

Junior point guard Sam Vinson led the way with 27 points including 24 in the first half to go with 11 rebounds and six assists for a double-double. Junior forward Luke Muller added 19 points to go with nine rebounds and five assists. Muller made 5-of-9 three-point tries.

"We've worked really hard in the off-season and we have to keep working hard in practice," said Jacob Brass, Highlands senior guard. "We just trust each other. We play hard on defense. We move the ball well. We have guys that can come off the bench and contribute."

Highlands saw two other players score in double figures. They were sophomore post Oliver Harris with 12 and junior post Bryson Cody with 10 to go with six rebounds.

"Ultimately, we wanted to play at our tempo and we were able to do that, especially early in the first half," said Kevin Listerman, Highlands Head Coach. "When we're able to play in the open floor with the shooters that we've got, we've got the potential to put up some pretty big numbers. Most importantly, I was impressed with the way we competed and how well we shared the ball."

Highlands made 30-of-55 shots for 55 percent including 12-of-21 from three-point range for 60 percent. The Bluebirds also made 22-of-29 free throws for 76 percent to go with 38 rebounds, 14 assists and just five turnovers.

Highlands scored 34 points in the first quarter. The Bluebirds led 56-28 at halftime and 69-47 after three quarters.

Ryle has a new head coach in Keaton Belcher, who came over from Pendleton County. The Raiders made 19-of-47 shots including 5-of-15 from three-point range for 33 percent and 14-of-21 free throws for 67 percent to go with 24 rebounds and 15 turnovers.

Senior forward Anthony Caggiano led the Raiders with 21 points. Junior guard Tyler Bush had 17.

"Caggiano was the guy that they tried to isolate in the post," Listerman said. "We did a good job of just keeping pressure on their guards and not letting them get comfortable running their offenses."

Highlands plays host to Bishop Brossart on Thursday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The Bluebirds ran away for the convincing road victory.

Highlands led 18-2 after the first quarter and 26-15 at halftime. The Bluebirds then led 46-24 after the third quarter.

"We jumped out on them big and then they came back there in the second quarter," said Jaime Walz-Richey, Highlands Head Coach. "We responded in the third quarter and did the things we talked about doing at halftime. There in the second quarter, we did a lot of selfish things we didn't do in the first quarter. We corrected that."

The Bluebirds made 18-of-53 shots for 34 percent including 7-of-21 three-point tries for 33 percent and 19-of-23 free throws for 83 percent. The Lady Eagles made 10-of-39 shots for 26 percent including 2-of-13 three-point tries for 15 percent and 10-of-13 free throws for 77 percent.

Highlands also had 36 rebounds, 15 fouls, 17 turnovers and nine steals. Junior forward Kelsey Listerman and junior guard Emma Mallery joined Macke, senior guard Maggie Hinegardner and junior forward Rory O'Hara in the starting lineup. Listerman led Highlands with nine rebounds and Mallery had a team-high three steals.

"When we moved the ball, we played unselfish. We scored more," Kelsey Listerman said. "We made them play faster and tired them out. That was a big part of the game."

Scott also had one player score in double figures. That was junior Sofia Allen with 15. The Lady Eagles had 28 rebounds, 20 fouls, 28 turnovers, four assists and 10 steals. Neither team had any blocked shots.
