The Highlands Bluebirds boys basketball team (6-0 overall) knew this game mattered more than the first five because of 36th District seeding implications.

But the Bluebirds continued to play as well as they have all season recording a 92-49 victory over the Dayton Greendevils (1-6) on Monday at Russell Bridges Gym. This marked the fifth time in six games that Highlands has scored 85 or more points.

"We just treated it like any other game," said Zach Barth, Highlands sophomore guard. "We just tried to do what we do every night. We trust each other with the ball and just play. It's been working out well this season."

Juniors Luke Muller and Sam Vinson did their things again to lead the Bluebirds. Muller had 21 points making all five free throws and Vinson had 16 making 7-of-10 shots. Vinson also blocked two shots.

Highlands made 31-of-59 shots for 53 percent including 12-of-28 from three-point range for 43 percent and 18-of-21 free throws for 86 percent. The Bluebirds also had 35 rebounds, 10 fouls, 18 assists, three turnovers, four blocked shots and 17 steals. Junior Bryson Cody had seven rebounds to lead the way and senior Hunter Ahlfeld had five assists.

"They played a little more zone than I expected," said Kevin Listerman, Highlands Head Coach. "We shot the three decent. We hit seven in the first half. I was really pleased with our defensive effort to be honest. We really did a good job of finding the open man and making the extra pass. I talked to the kids before the game about playing hard and playing to our standard. I thought we responded and did that well."

Dayton made 19-of-45 shots for 42 percent including 7-of-14 three-point tries for 50 percent and 4-of-8 free throws for 50 percent. The Greendevils also had 24 rebounds, 15 fouls, five assists and 19 turnovers. Jordan Marksberry lead Dayton with 13 points with Colin Mason and Lorenzo Price scoring 11 and 10 respectively.

Dayton has a new head coach in Ron Kinmon. The lone win for the Greendevils came 57-33 on Dec. 12 against Covington Latin.

"They played hard. They're trying to run the stuff that he's asked them to do," Listerman said. "I thought they competed very well. Our kids matched their intensity. I felt it was a really well-played game."

Highlands plays in the Mike Reitz Tournament at Harrison County on Friday at 8:15 p.m. against the Madison Central Indians (2-3). Highlands faces either Harrison County or Augusta on Saturday.
