Bluebirds Lose Final Game at Lexington Catholic

Boyd County Beats Highlands in Overtime

The Highlands Bluebirds girls basketball team (3-4 overall) dropped a third game at the Traditional Bank Holiday Classic at Lexington Catholic on Sunday by a 64-61 score to the Boyd County Lady Lions (4-5).

Highlands led by two with 5.5 seconds left in the game. But Boyd County junior shooting guard Harley Paynter took the ball the length of the court and made a lay-up to send the game to overtime.

Paynter finished with 27 to lead Boyd County and junior shooting guard Bailey Rucker scored 14. Boyd County made 10 three-pointers, 10 two-pointers and 14-of-21 free throws for 67 percent.

Nine different Bluebirds scored in the loss. Senior guard Maggie Hinegardner again led the way with 16 and senior guard Piper Macke scored 10. Junior forward Emma Riccobene and junior post Rory O'Hara scored nine points each. Highlands made five triples, 13 two-point shots and 20-of-27 free throws for 75 percent.

Highlands also had 11 assists, 15 turnovers, eight steals and 30 rebounds. Junior Kelsey Listerman led the Bluebirds with three steals. O'Hara had six rebounds and Macke dished out five assists.

The Bluebirds face Lexington Dunbar (5-2) to open the LaRosa's Holiday Classic on Thursday. Game time is 2 p.m.
