The Highlands Bluebirds girls basketball team (3-1 overall) opened district play against the Bellevue Tigers (3-1) four days after the first loss of the season. Highlands has not lost to a district opponent since a 55-45 loss at Newport Central Catholic in the district title game on Feb. 27, 2014.
Highlands veteran Head Coach Jaime Walz-Richey said turnovers hurt the Bluebirds in the loss Saturday against Cincinnati (Ohio) Princeton. Highlands made 10 three-pointers, 20 two-point shots and 9-of-10 free throws for 90 percent in the victory.
"We talked before the game that the scores really don't matter right now," Richey said. "The only time the scores matter is February and March. We talked about what's important now. We just came up with things we need to do on defense that we thought we had to improve from Saturday. I think we came out and executed. Now it can't just be one game. We have to bring it consistently. It's a step in the right direction and the girls have to continue to work at it."
Ten different Bluebirds scored. Highlands senior guard Piper Macke led the way with 19 points and junior post Rory O'Hara had 15. Junior forward Kelsey Listerman followed with 10.
A number of players saw action in the second half. That included junior guard Katelyn Vaught.
"We've been working really hard in practice," Vaught said. "It's mainly focus. We saw how it really helps us. In practice, they always say, 'Don't be afraid to make mistakes.' If you're not afraid to make mistakes in practice, you won't be making them in the game."
Bellevue made 9-of-12 free throws for 75 percent. The Tigers also made six two-pointers and two triples. Senior guard Kierstyn Ratterman led the Tigers with 10 points.
Highlands plays at Covington Holy Cross (3-1) on Monday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
