Highlands Girls Drop Close Game Against West Carter

Bluebirds Have Lost Five of Last Six Games

The Highlands Bluebirds girls basketball team (4-6 overall) could not pull out another win in the LaRosa's Holiday Classic on Saturday.

The West Carter Lady Comets (4-4) edged the Bluebirds, 63-62 in overtime in the fifth-place game. Faith Conn is in her first year as head coach of West Carter.

Highlands saw three players score in double figures and nearly a fourth. Junior forward Kelsey Listerman scored 17 with senior guard Piper Macke and junior post Rory O'Hara scoring 11 and 10 respectively. Freshman guard Alyssa Harris scored nine.

The Bluebirds hit 18-of-42 shots for 43 percent and 2-of-10 three-point tries for 20 percent. Highlands also made just 24-of-37 free throws for 65 percent and had 31 rebounds, 11 assists, 17 turnovers and 12 steals. Senior forward Meghan Walz led Highlands with seven rebounds. Macke had three assists and four steals and junior guard Emma Mallery had four steals.

West Carter saw sophomore Allie Stone score 20 with senior Becca Nolen scoring 16. Stone also had seven rebounds.

The Lady Comets made 21-of-56 shots for 38 percent and 8-of-26 three-point tries for 31 percent. West Carter also made 13-of-14 free throws for 93 percent and grabbed 26 rebounds.

The Bluebirds face Boyd County (7-5) in the Centria Metals/Penn Station Shootout at Franklin County on Saturday. Game time is 5 p.m.
