The Highlands Bluebirds boys basketball team shot an amazing 35-for-50 from the field for 70 percent on its way to a 96-65 9th Region victory over the Covington Holy Cross Indians in Fort Thomas on Monday.

Highlands (3-0 overall) made 8-of-17 three-point shots for 47 percent and 18-of-24 free throws for 75 percent. The Bluebirds also had 33 rebounds and 19 assists.

Junior Sam Vinson led Highlands with 27 points to go with five rebounds and three assists. Junior Luke Muller had 25 points making 5-of-8 three-point shots to go with eight rebounds. Senior Hunter Ahlfeld had nine points to go with four assists and junior Bryson Cody had nine points and three rebounds. Senior Jacob Brass had six assists to go with two points and three rebounds and sophomore Zach Barth had four assists and five points.

"We've talked all off-season with this group about being unselfish and turning down good shots to get great shots," said Kevin Listerman, Highlands Head Coach. "We did that at a very high level (Monday). With the shooters that we have, it makes for a lot of fun watching the ball go in the basket."

Freshman guard Luke Meyer had 10 points for the Indians (1-2). Senior guard Caeden Castleman had 11 points and junior guard Jeremiah Hicks had 10. Brass and junior Evan Rom took turns guarding Meyer.

"We just came into the game with a good game plan," Rom said. "We keyed their best offensive player. (Meyer) is a super quick guard who got up and down the court fast. He finishes around the rim well. But we stopped him with that."

Holy Cross made 20-of-45 shots for 44 percent including 7-of-18 three-point shots for 39 percent and 18-of-23 free throws for 78 percent. The Indians also had 26 rebounds.
