Highlands Girls Hoops Drops Fourth Straight

Bluebirds Lose First Game of LaRosa's Holiday Classic

The Highlands Bluebirds girls basketball team (3-5 overall) lost another close one in the opening game of the LaRosa's Holiday Classic on Thursday, 60-56 to the Lexington Dunbar Lady Bulldogs (6-3).

The annual tournament takes place at Conner. The Bluebirds finished runner-up in the tournament last year.

Juniors Kelsey Listerman and Rory O'Hara led Highlands scoring 14 and 11 points respectively. The Bluebirds made 16-of-45 shots for 36 percent including 3-of-14 from three-point range for 21 percent and 11-of-14 free throws for 79 percent.

Highlands also had 22 rebounds, seven assists, 17 turnovers and nine steals. O'Hara had seven rebounds with senior guard Piper Macke scoring eight points and recording three assists.

Juniors Elise Ellison-Coons scored 18 points and Tanaya Cecil scored 15 to lead Dunbar. Ellison-Coons also had 10 of the team's 32 rebounds.

Dunbar made 18-of-47 shots for 38 percent including 5-of-15 three-point tries for 33 percent. The Lady Bulldogs also hit 9-of-20 free throws for 45 percent.

Highlands plays the Rowan County Vikings (5-4) at 10 a.m. on Friday.
