Head Coach Kevin Listerman said the Highlands Bluebirds boys basketball team faced some adversity in the second game of the regular season against the in-county rival Bishop Brossart Mustangs.

But the Bluebirds overcame it to move to 2-0 on the young season with a 65-58 win over the Mustangs (1-2). Highlands has won four straight against Bishop Brossart.

"(The Mustangs) are a typical Brossart team," Listerman said. "They're well-coached. They're very fundamentally sound, especially defensively. They're very physical with things in terms of the offense. (Bishop Brossart Head) Coach (Mike) Code had them ready to go. We dictated more of the tempo in the first half. Brossart dictated the tempo a bit more in the second half. But in all, I was really proud with the way our kids responded. We were pretty unselfish."

Highlands battled some foul trouble in the win to some starters. But that allowed the depth to develop as 10 different Bluebirds scored.

Junior forward Luke Muller led the Bluebirds with 20 points and four rebounds. Senior guard Hunter Ahlfeld followed with 13. Junior point guard Sam Vinson scored 11 and junior forward Bryson Cody scored 10.

"I have some shoes to fill. (Senior forward) Jack Delagrange is going to be back in a few weeks (from injury)," Cody said. "We're just trying to build as a team and win games. We're all trying to be on the same page so we can play as a team and have a great season."

Vinson had a double-double with 10 rebounds and eight assists and Muller added four rebounds to go with five three-pointers. Ahlfeld had four triples.

Highlands credited the likes of junior guard Evan Rom and sophomore forward Oliver Harris for filling in while some starters had to sit with foul trouble. Rom added five rebounds. Senior guard Jacob Brass and Vinson had to come out with fouls for long stretches of the game.

"That was good for us to learn through that," Listerman said. "We had two pressure situations where we had to step up and make some free throws and we'll learn from that. I like the way our team responds when we make adjustments. I thought we drew things up out of timeouts and at halftime and really did a good job of getting the look that we wanted. I think this is a very unselfish group. This is going to be a fun team to coach. I think this team has a pretty good chance to be good."

The Bluebirds led 33-23 at halftime. Highlands made 21-of-59 field goals for 36 percent including 9-of-20 from three-point range for 45 percent, had 12 assists and grabbed 35 rebounds. The Bluebirds also made 14-of-22 free throws for 63 percent.

Senior forward Ethan Eilerman led the Mustangs with 28 points. Sophomore center David Govan added 10.

Bishop Brossart made 19-of-44 shots for 43 percent including 3-of-13 from three-point range for 23 percent and had 22 rebounds. The Mustangs also made 14-of-18 free throws for 78 percent.
