We got some timely hits. We had some great approaches. Guys took some really good swings against a really good pitcher (Scott County senior Jordan Fox). We took advantage of some of the mistakes he left out over the plate."

Highlands went 9-for-31 at the plate for a .290 clip. The Bluebirds scored once in the first inning before exploding for five in the fifth inning.

"Our guys are really, really coach-able and competitive," Baioni said. "When you mix those things, you have a chance to be successful."

The Bluebirds had five extra-base hits led by senior Trent Johnson's grand slam home run. Senior Cooper Schwalbach, junior Mason Schwalbach, senior Trey Gabbard and junior Ethan Kavanagh all doubled. Kavanagh and Mason Schwalbach had two hits to lead Highlands.

Eleven players saw action for Highlands. Senior Nolan Turner and junior Nate Gesenhues did not start but came into the game. Gesenhues scored a run.

"Everyone tries to play his part and do the best he can," said Brennan Haigis, Highlands junior. "When you're called up, you have to step into the role and do what you need to help everyone else around you to try to pull off the win."

The Bluebirds play at Dixie Heights (11-11) on Wednesday. Game time is 5 p.m.
