The Highlands Bluebirds had to win a shoot-out to conclude the Reid Rizzo Classic at Highland Park on Sunday.
Highlands (18-6) beat the Upper Arlington Golden Bears, 21-16. The Bluebirds took third place in the classic originally hosted by Cincinnati La Salle. Saturday rains forced the postponement of the game for a day. Highlands is 2-3 against Ohio opponents.
Both teams had 19 hits. Senior Trent Johnson led Highlands going 4-for-4 with a double, home run, five runs batted in and three runs scored. Senior Bryce Ziegler went 4-for-5 with a double, home run, five RBI and three runs scored. Junior Nate Gesenhues went 3-for-4 with a double, five RBI and three runs scored. Junior Mason Schwalbach went 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored. Senior Chris Bridewell went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Senior Trey Gabbard also doubled and senior Nolan Turner scored twice.
Sophomore Jacob Gulley started the game and picked up the win. Junior Luke Weidner pitched one inning before Turner finished the game to pick up the save. The three combined for three strikeouts.
Highlands scored 12 runs to start the game. The Bluebirds led 18-8 after three innings before adding three more in the fourth.
The Bluebirds travel to Georgetown to face the Scott County Cardinals (14-8) on Tuesday. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
