The Highlands Bluebirds moved to 3-0 in 9th Region action with a 6-2 road win Wednesday over the St. Henry Crusaders. Both teams are 6-2 on the season.
Highlands outhit St. Henry, 9-5. Senior Trent Johnson led the Bluebirds going 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in the first inning, five runs batted in and a run scored. Senior Trey Gabbard also had two hits for Highlands and senior Cooper Schwalbach doubled and scored twice. Junior Ethan Kavanagh also scored twice.
"(Johnson) had a huge day," said Jeremy Baioni, Highlands Head Coach. "He cleared the left center fence pretty well. That's not a short fence. What's been good all year is our approaches at the plate. Our guys are really disciplined and for the most part, swinging at good pitches. They have a plan when they get up there. Now you work on executing that plan. We had a lot of guys that executed that plan really well. We had some balls that were hit pretty hard that didn't go for hits."
Five different pitchers threw for Highlands with sophomore Jacob Gulley pitching the first inning to pick up the win. They combined to strike out five and walk five.
Highlands made no errors defensively. Baioni said senior Chris Bridewell started an amazing double play.
Highlands plays at Jeffersonville (Indiana) in the Super Prep Series on Friday. Game time is 5 p.m.
