Jenkins Lady Cavalier basketball senior Whitney Creech etched herself into the Kentucky record books weeks ago.
But despite seeing action for the Lady Cavaliers (16-13 overall) since the fifth grade, Creech never experienced the joy of playing in the 14th Region Tournament. That changed Wednesday as Creech scored 46 points to lead the host Lady Cavaliers to a 62-55 victory over the June Buchanan Lady Crusaders in the 53rd District semifinals. Jenkins had not been to the region tournament since 2008.
Creech has 1,461 points on the season and 5,328 for her career. The career total is the most in Kentucky history for both boys and girls. She has surpassed Highlands Head Coach Jaime Walz-Richey's old record total of 4,948 by 380 points. Creech averages just more than 50.3 points per game.
Jenkins has two more games this season. The next goal for Jenkins is winning its first district championship since 2001. The Lady Cavaliers take on Knott County Central for that crown Friday at 7 p.m.
