Creech goes above 1,400 points on season in Jenkins loss

BETSY LAYNE - Whitney Creech scored 42 points in the final regular season game of her storied girls basketball career Friday on the road.

But the Jenkins Lady Cavaliers (15-13 overall) lost on the road to the Betsy Layne Ladycats, 65-60. Creech fouled out with 1:30 left in the game.

"(We need to) just play with energy," Creech said. "We need to come out motivated and play with passion and heart."

Creech finished the regular season with 1.415 points on the season for an average of just more than 50.5 per game. Creech upped her state record for career points in Kentucky for both boys and girls to 5,282. Creech is the lone player for both genders in Kentucky to ever hit 5,000 points for a career.

"It ended on a disappointing note coming off the regular season," said Ashley Addington, Jenkins Head Coach. "We were looking for that 16th win to make (the record) look a little bit better. But these (six senior) girls started together in the seventh grade. All the hard work is paying off."

Creech and Jenkins hope to make the region tournament for the first time since 2008. The Lady Cavaliers take on the June Buchanan Lady Crusaders (11-9) in the 53rd District semifinals on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Jenkins.
