The Highlands Bluebirds soccer team recorded another shut-out of a 35th District opponent Tuesday blanking the Covington Holmes Bulldogs, 7-0.

Highlands junior goalkeeper Will Burnham has only had to make two saves this season. The Bluebirds outshot the Bulldogs, 22-1. Highlands scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half after leading just 1-0 at halftime.

"We actually didn't start particularly well," Niedert said. "We'd been off for the past few days. We weren't able to train (Monday) because of the (Solar) Eclipse. The last time we got together was Friday so we had this unplanned three-day break leading up to the game. It's hard to get the energy up and going. We set a goal (at halftime) to get two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half. We ended up getting three. We were in good shape from that point."

Aside from Burnham, Highlands starts four juniors in the backfield. The defenders are Drew CavaciniDevin HarrisWill Hochleutner and Alex Ford.

"We're young back there, but we're strong," Niedert said. "We're two games in and have two shut-outs. We've faced very few shots. It's says a lot for our back four and our goalkeeper. But it also says a lot for the six guys in front of them. Obviously, if a team is busy defending us, our guys don't have to do as much of the defensive work. That's been playing a big role as well."

Carter Holmes and Joe Broering scored twice for Highlands. Senior Nick Gish added a goal and two assists for the Bluebirds. Luke Schweitzer and Brady Finnegan scored the other Highlands goals with Blake Shuley and Porter Hedenberg also recording assists.

"When it comes down to it, we need the full squad to put in 110 percent to get the job done," Cavacini said. "(The team chemistry) is getting better as we go along (and) play more games. This is a mixed team. We have all (grade) levels. I think we're learning. It's getting there pretty fast."

Highlands travels to Oldham County on Thursday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Highlands (1-2) hoped to earn that break-through win against the Thoroughbreds (7-0) to open 36th District action with a nice crowd on its home floor. But that didn't happen.

NewCath left with a 26-24, 25-23, 25-20 victory. The Thoroughbreds have won 24 of the last 25 games dating back to 2005. The lone Highlands win during that span came in the 2012 district championship game.

"We played so out of character," said Katelyn Sallee, Highlands Head Coach. "It was crazy. I think the environment was a little bit rattling. It exposed some immaturity on our team some lack of composure, some lack of leadership that we haven't felt yet three games into our season. It tested us and we didn't do well. I think they're incredibly disappointed and they're ready to step up and answer the call the next time."

Highlands had a lot of success hitting from the outside early with the tandem of sophomore setter Audrey Graves and sophomore outside hitter Casey Dunn. But NewCath slid two blockers to that side and blocked them so Highlands had to set the middle with players like Ava Hockney and Margot Seidel. Graves had 28 assists with Dunn and Hockey recording nine kills each.

Highlands travels to Kings (Ohio) on Thursday. Game time is 6 p.m.
