Highlands Holds Off St. Henry

The Highlands Ladybirds took down the host St. Henry Lady Crusaders, 2-1 in 9th Region action Wednesday in Erlanger to move to 2-0 on the season.

Highlands outshot St. Henry, 23-5. A lightning delay stopped the game with 2:40 left in the first half. Sophomore Maria Wiefering scored both goals. She has all three Ladybird goals on the season as Highlands is figuring out ways to finish early in the season. Gwen Gorman had an assist on the first goal and Greta Noble assisted the second goal.

"The main reason (for the goals) is my teammates are making it easy for me," Maria Wiefering said. "They did a lot of hard work making the runs and getting me the ball off things we've learned and practiced like we're supposed to do."

Highlands played the game without a few key players. Goalkeeper Olivia McQueary left in the first half with an injury before saving two shots. But sophomore Maggie Hinegardner came in and saved two shots. St. Henry did not score until four minutes remained in the game.

"Other girls are learning from their decisions," said Brian Wiefering, Highlands Head Coach. "I shot it too hard in front of the goal when I could have tapped it in. They just have to have a little more composure in the box. The way you learn that is to fail a few times. But they're doing what it takes to win. I'm actually happy with how they're playing. They're possessing the ball. They're working hard. They're disciplined."

The Ladybirds play Saturday at Cincinnati Ursuline. Game time is 5 p.m.
