Gabbard Earns Medalist Honors

The Highlands Bluebirds put together another good finish tying for third in the Bourbon County Invitational at Houston Oaks scoring a 331. The 8th Region Tournament will take place there on Sept. 25.

"It was a great week because we played a lot of different style courses," said Bert Richey, Highlands Head Coach. "(Houston Oaks) was a tough course. It was long, but it was well-manicured. It had nice fairways, very good greens. If you hit good shots, you were rewarded. If you hit bad shots, you were penalized. Some of the other courses weren't like that. You could hit a good shot and it would go in the water because of a severe slope. We wanted to go down, get a good look at the course and see how we did against some really good competition, but also against a lot of the teams in our region."

Freshman JD Gabbard took home the medalist honors shooting a 75. That marks his first tournament victory at the varsity level. It was a Tier 1 Tournament meaning more than 100 golfers played in it.

"He got off to a rough start, but he showed great patience and maturity," Richey said of Gabbard. "(He) just kind of stayed with it and di d a really good job of not giving up on the round early. For a youngster, sometimes when you get off to a rough start, you can lose focus. (Thursday), he didn't. He beared down and came through with a really good round of golf on a tough golf course and beat a lot of good players."

Freshman Luke Muller followed with an 82 and senior Aaron Verst shot an 86 with junior Brady Walz rounding out the scoring with an 88. Eighth-grader Jack Schneider scored a 97.

Highlands will play in the Covington Catholic Invitational at Summit Hills on Monday at 9 a.m. The Bluebirds will face top teams from Kentucky and Ohio in that tournament.
