Tuesday Roundup: Spencer makes history in Highlands win

It was a banner day for Highlands softball junior pitcher Bailey Spencer on Tuesday.

Spencer managed a school record leading the Ladybirds (10-7) to a 9-1 win over host Covington Holmes. That record was 16 strikeouts in the no hitter.

Highlands travels to Beechwood on Wednesday. Game time is 5 p.m.

Softball:
Newport Central Catholic 9, Bishop Brossart 0:

The Thoroughbreds (14-5) took care of their rivals.

Pitcher Haley Meyers allowed one hit in the game. She struck out five and walked three.

NewCath played solid defense behind her committing no errors. Casey Kohls had six assists and two putouts.

NewCath had 11 hits. Meyers pushed her team-leading batting average to .456 going 3-for-4. Loren Zimmerman also went 3-for-4 with two two-run doubles and Michaela Ware went 2-for-4 with a single and triple. Teammate Lexi Breen went 2-for-3 with a run batted in and Morgan Martini had an RBI single.

NewCath plays host to Ryle on Wednesday. Game time is 5 p.m.

Baseball:
Cooper 8, Newport Central Catholic 6:

The Thoroughbreds (8-13) could not make it two in a row in the season.

They play host to Covington Holmes on Wednesday. Game time is 5 p.m.
