Monday Softball Briefs: Highlands, NewCath record wins

The Highlands Ladybirds moved to 4-5 on the season with a five-inning 13-1 run-ruling at Walton-Verona on Monday.

Highlands travels to Bellevue on Wednesday for a 36th District contest. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

All "A" 9th Region Tournament:
NewCath wins twice:

The Thoroughbreds moved to 7-3 with two run rulings to open the All "A" 9th Region Tournament.

They beat Newport in five innings, 11-1. Seven of the Thoroughbreds' 12 hits went for extra bases. Haley Meyers ripped two doubles to the fence with Morgan Martini and Kennedy Bin doubling as well. Loren Zimmerman doubled and tripled off the fence and Casey Kohls hit her third home run of the season. It came inside the park.

Meyers pitched another good game. She retired the first nine Newport batters and allowed just two hits in the fourth inning.

NewCath then beat Covington Holy Cross, 18-0 in three innings scoring nine in the first two innings. Meyers threw a no-hitter walking just one.

NewCath banged out eight hits and took advantage of five Holy Cross errors. Kohls went 2-for-2 with a double and three runs batted in with Kristen Schreiber going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Bin also went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Meyers collected her third double of the evening.

NewCath faces St. Henry in the second region semifinal game at 7 p.m. The winner faces either Lloyd Memorial or Dayton.
