Wednesday Baseball Roundup: NewCath blitzes Newport

The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds baseball team kicked thing into high gear in the 36th District opener Wednesday.

NewCath (2-5 overall) run-ruled the host Newport Wildcats, 26-7 in five innings Friday. Junior Josh Schneider picked up the pitching win for the Thoroughbreds and went 5-for-5 at the plate with three runs batted in.

The Thoroughbreds saw two more players record three hits. Ryan Hans went 3-for-3 and Nate Enslen went 3-for-4 with a triple. Teammate Clint Bartels followed going 2-for-2 with a home run, double and six RBI. Brandon Gray and Owen Workman also had two hits and Zack Pangallo added a double. Gray had a double and three runs batted in.

NewCath travels to Covington Catholic on Thursday. Game time is Noon.

Baseball:
Olentangy (Ohio) 6, Highlands 1:

The Bluebirds (3-1) dropped their first contest of the year.

Highlands scored first when Todd Ramey hit a sacrifice fly to score Brady Murray. Murray singled, stole second and advanced to third when Jake Whitford singled.

Highlands continues action in the Cal Ripken Experience against Pittsford (New York) Sutherland on Thursday. Game time is 3 p.m.
