Tuesday Roundup: Highlands baseball, softball record home wins

The Highlands Bluebirds avenged the loss in last year's 9th Region baseball title game in a huge way Tuesay.

Highlands (12-3) handled the Conner Cougars, 10-2 to win its eighth in a row and move to 4-0 in region play. The Bluebirds lost 3-0 to the Cougars in the region title game.

Jake Whitford had a big game offensively going 2-for-4 with a home run, five runs batted in and two runs scored. Mark Walkenhorst also went 2-for-3 with three RBI, a run scored and two doubles. D.J. Mills added a double as Highlands outhit Conner, 11-6.

Ethan Doty (2-0) picked up the pitching win for Highlands. He threw six innings striking out seven and walking just one.

The Bluebirds play host to Newport Central Catholic in a 36th District seeding game Wednesday. Game time is 5 p.m.

Softball:
Highlands 3, Cincinnati Colerain 1:

The Ladybirds (8-5) took down the Ohio visitors for their fifth straight win.

Bailey Spencer picked up the pitching win for Highlands. She struck out five, walked two and limited Colerain to four hits.

Highlands faces East Central (Ind.) on Wednesday back at the Bird Cage. Game time is 5:30 p.m.

Newport Central Catholic 23, Bellevue 0:

The Thoroughbreds (11-5) won the 36th District seeding game to move to 3-0 in district play in three innings.

Haley Meyers pitched the first inning for NewCath and Jaden Watts threw the next two. They combined to strike out six in the no-hitter.

NewCath pounded out 15 hits including four home runs. Kennedy Bin had a two-run blast with Lexi Potts, Morgan Martini and Alex Burkart all with grand slams.

NewCath plays host to Walton-Verona on Wednesday. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
