Highlands pulled away from the Covington Holy Cross Lady Indians, 5-1 at Eva G. Farris Sports Complex/John Wysong Field in Covington. Highlands moved to 7-1-1 against region opponents.
"We've been playing well as a team and working the ball around the field instead of dribbling as much," said Rylee Thomas, Highlands senior midfielder. "We have been passing and finding the open person, which has really helped us these past couple games. We'll do anything to win."
Highlands had 44 shots including 16 on goal. Holy Cross recorded seven shots with five on goal. Junior goalkeeper Jasmine Rehberger recorded four saves for the Bluebirds.
Highlands also had four corner kicks to two for Holy Cross. Senior forward Maria Broering took three corner kicks for the Bluebirds.
"Coming in, we just wanted to make sure that we were competing," said Alex Dean, Highlands Head Coach. "It was 2-1 at halftime. We told them, 'Yes, we're competing. Now we have to start scoring.' We made some adjustments and scored some goals in the second half to make sure the finals wasn't 2-1. We made a mistake in the back. Those things happen. We couldn't let those things build."
Senior defender Lauren Deckert scored five points for the Bluebirds with two goals and an assist. Deckert has five goals and three assists on the season for 13 points.
Broering added two goals for four points and sophomore sister Faith Broering had the other goal. Seniors Tatum Price, Katelynn Helminiak and junior Kenzie Nehus and Greta Noble had one assist each.
