Highlands Thursday Round-Up

Bluebirds Win Third Straight

PHOTO: G. Michael Graham, Fort Thomas Matters. The Highland Bluebirds volleyball team knocked off Bishop Brossart to move to 13-2 overall on Thursday.
The Highlands Bluebirds volleyball team (13-2 overall) handled the visiting Bishop Brossart Lady Mustangs (11-8), 3-0 (25-10. 25-14, 25-13) for its third straight win.

Highlands is 4-0 against its Campbell County rivals on the season. Bishop Brossart recently won the All "A" 10th Region title and went 3-3 in the All "A" State Tournament.

"I thought it was really good," said Katelyn Sallee, Highlands Head Coach. "We were able to execute and finish pretty quickly also making quite a few adjustments and changes intentionally trying people at different places, giving people different looks. I feel like we have the depth and versatility to do that."

Highlands hit .301 in the match connecting for 34 kills on 83 attempts with nine errors. The Bluebirds also had 34 assists, 11 aces, 39 digs, two solo and two assisted blocks to go with four service, four serve receiving, two blocking and two general ball-hitting errors.

Sophomore middle blocker CC Shick led Highlands with 10 kills to go with an assisted block. Senior outside hitter Casey Dunn had five kills, six aces and 13 digs with senior setter Audrey Graves recording 31 assists, six kills, four digs and a combination block. Senior middle blocker Ava Hockney had five kills and two solo blocks.

Sophomore defensive specialist Madison Clore had six digs and three aces with senior defensive specialist Brooke Biltz recording five digs and senior defensive specialist Rylee Kirschenbaum making four digs.

Highlands saw 11 players receive action total. Sophomore Lauren Buemi had four kills and three digs with junior Laura Winkler recording three kills.

"I just go in with a positive attitude and do the best I can," said Sophia Sarakatsannis, Highlands sophomore outside hitter. "We have a pretty supportive team so they all are trying to help everyone get better. Just watching (the upperclassmen) has helped us improve a lot because they see things that maybe the coaches might not and they tell us. They don't hold back and they want everyone to be the best that they can be."

Highlands plays host to Ryle on Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Bluebirds moved to 4-0 with a second win over the Pioneers this season.

Quarterback Charlie Noon had three rushing touchdowns and threw another one to wide receiver Jack Hendrix. Sam Robinson added a rushing touchdown and Ryan DeBurger picked up a fumble and returned it for a score. Davis Burleigh added a field goal.

Highalnds plays at Holmes on Thursday. Game time is 6 p.m.
