Highlands Girls Soccer Posts Convincing Win

Bluebirds Make Lead Stick

The Highlands Bluebirds girls soccer team appears to have its swagger back.

The Bluebirds (10-1-5 overall) ventured to Dixie Heights on Wednesday and came away with a 3-0 victory. Highlands junior goalkeeper Jasmine Rehberger stopped four shots from the Lady Colonels (10-7-1) in the eighth shutout of the season for the Bluebirds.

"It was a very impressive game," said Alex Dean, Highlands Head Coach. "We started clicking from the beginning, connecting passes and doing things that we really hadn't seen this year like switching from the back, finding a center mid(fielder) and getting (the ball) to the other side. The intensity just kind of grew and then we made sure we got that shutout."

Highlands had not been playing well in the last three games. But senior defender Tatum Price said the seniors stepped forward to address things.

"The seniors really were encouraging everybody to just keep their heads up and keep playing the way we have been," Price said. "We usually just try to tell them to keep their composure, just focus on the game or the practice and put everything behind them. The team has been really good at that."

Highlands had 26 shots with seven on goal. Sisters Faith and Maria Broering had the goals along with sophomore Macy Hedenberg. Senior Lauren Deckert and junior Kenzie Nehus had assists. Maria Broering is second on the team with seven goals.

Dixie Heights has scored 57 goals this year. Three players have at least 10 in junior Carson Smith with 16 and freshman Ashton Ivy and sophomore Grace Gerding with 10 each.

"They have speed and size up top," Dean said. "But we did a really nice job of making sure that we had coverage for that speed. If our outside backs got beat, our center backs were there to help out. We did a nice job of making sure we helped out our teammates."

Highlands travels to Covington Holy Cross on Saturday. Game time is 11:30 a.m. in Covington.
