The Highlands Bluebirds girls soccer team (4-0-2 overall) picked a great time to play its greatest game of the season.

Highlands ventured to Silver Grove and dominated the host 3-3 Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds, 8-0 in a 36th District showdown. Highlands has won the last seven meetings against NewCath.

"It was fantastic, excellent, all-around," said Alex Dean, Highlands Head Coach. "The JV game got cancelled so we decided to bring up some of our juniors that play on the JV and they got some experience on the varsity level. They did very well. We were stringing four, five passes together, serving it wide and just finishing the goals. This was a great game to watch from our standpoint."

Highlands had not played since Saturday. The Bluebirds tied Assumption, 1-1 at Tower Park that day.

"I think the time off not only led to self-reflection, but as a team, we've been targeting our areas of weakness with specific drills like finishing," said Lauren Deckert, Highlands senior defender. "Our last practice really shadowed our finishing with one vs ones to goal. As a rival, I think our biggest achievement in my opinion was not underestimating them."

Highlands had 22 shots with 19 on goal. Sophomore forward Chloe Bramble led the Bluebirds with eight points on four goals. She has a team-high seven goals and 17 points to go with three assists.

Senior forward Maria Broering had five points on one goal and three assists and sophomore midfielder Faith Broering had a goal and two assists for four points. Maria Broering has five goals and three assists for 13 points and Faith Broering leads Highlands with five assists to go with three goals and 11 points.

Senior midfielder Parker Price and sophomore forward Macy Hedenberg had the other two goals for Highlands. Senior midfielder Natalie Ossege and junior Ashley Herfel had one assist each for the Bluebirds.

NewCath had four shots with three on goal. Junior goalkeeper Jasmine Rehberger had three saves.

Highlands plays in the Zionsville Invitational (Indiana) Lady Eagle Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Bluebirds play Evansville (Indiana) Memorial at 6:45 p.m. Friday.
