Highlands handles Ashland to open holiday classic

The Highlands Ladybirds started the annual LaRosa's Holiday Classic with a nice win.

Highlands (8-2) took down the four-time 16th Region champion Ashland Blazer Kittens, 48-35 behind a solid game from senior post McKenzie Leigh. Leigh scored 22 points making 8-of-15 shots including one three-pointer.

Highlands made 16-of-47 shots for 34 percent including 2-of-17 from three-point range for 12 percent. The Ladybirds made the most of their free-throw tries hitting 14-of-22 for 64 percent.

Ashland made just 11-of-38 shots for 29 percent including 3-of-15 from three-point range for 20 percent. The Kittens also hit 10-of-14 free-throw attempts for 71 percent.

Mykasa Robinson led Ashland with 23 points. She made 7-of-9 free-throw tries.

Highlands takes on Notre Dame (6-2) to continue the tournament at Conner at 1:30 p.m. Notre Dame edged Marshall County, 44-40 to open the tournament.
