The two-time defending All “A” boys basketball state champs had little problem in the 9th Region opener Monday at Covington Holy Cross.

The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds (12-3 overall) handled the Villa Madonna Blue Lightning, 84-29. NewCath has won two straight region crowns and 12 overall to go with three state championships.

NewCath saw just one player reach double figures in the win. That was Drew McDonald with 11 points.

NewCath continues tournament action Tuesday against Heritage Academy. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
