The Newport
Central Catholic Thoroughbreds boys basketball team unsurprisingly recorded its
12th consecutive All “A” 9th Region semifinal contest.
The
Thoroughbreds (14-3 overall) took down the Beechwood Tigers, 72-41 to do that
Friday at Covington Holy Cross. Zack Pangallo led NewCath with 25 points.
The last
time NewCath did not play to go to the All “A” State Tournament was 2003 when the
St. Henry Crusaders beat the Thoroughbreds in the second round on their way to
winning the whole thing. The Thoroughbreds have won consecutive All “A” state
crowns in addition to winning the All “A” 9th Region title eight of the last 11
years and 10 times in 14 seasons.
NewCath
faces St. Henry (12-8) for the region championship back at Holy Cross on
Saturday. Game time is 7 p.m.
