Two Tough Losses for Highlands Hoops
But the Bluebirds came up short in a 57-54 loss. Highlands saw three players score in double figures as Zoie Barth once again led the way with 18 points making 7-of-20 shots. Hanna Buecker followed with 17 and Chloe Jansen scored 11.
Boyd County career 2,000-point scorer Savannah Wheeler led the way with 20 points. The Marshall University commit made 7-of-20 shots including two three-pointers and Harley Paynter scored 15.
Highlands made 18-of-49 shots for 37 percent including 5-of-21 three-point tries for 24 percent and 13-of-20 free throws for 65 percent. Boyd County made 22-of-54 shots for 41 percent including 5-of-27 three-point tries for 19 percent and 8-of-14 free throws for 57 percent.
Highlands won the rebounding battle, 38-34. Barth led the way with 12 for a double-double.
Highlands faces Ashland (7-2) to continue the tournament Friday. Game time is 1:30 p.m. back at LexCath.

The Bluebirds (4-5) led the Royals (7-2) for most of the first half until late in the third quarter.
But Highlands could not stop the explosive Royals. They finished the third quarter with a 12-0 run to go up for good at 52-44 to win the US Bank Mike Murphy Classic game.
Senior Levi Dunaway led Mason County with 25 points to go with 12 rebounds, five assists and three steals for a double-double. Junior Jaylen Lofton had 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists and Jeremiah Jones had 11 points and six rebounds.
The Bluebirds also saw three players score in double figures. Jacob Noe led the way with 12 with Jack Hegge and Nate Roberts scoring 11 and 10 respectively.
Highlands faces Montgomery County in the Gateway Holiday Classic on Dec. 28. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
