The Highlands competitive cheerleading squad finished fourth in the Co-Ed A Class over the weekend at Alltech Arena in Lexington scoring 77.5 points. Bullitt Central won that class with 88.9 points.

Basketball, Boys:
Highlands 58, St. Henry 57:

The Bluebirds (1-4 overall, 1-2 9th Region) needed one big shot to come away with their first victory of the season and they executed it.

With five seconds left, Highlands senior Carl Schoellman made his second three-pointer to lift the Bluebirds to victory. Scheollman credited fellow senior Robby Gabbard with a great pass for the assist on the inbound play. The Bluebirds lost a tight 46-45 game to Covington Holmes to open the season before losing the next three by 10 or more points.

"They initially left me fairly open with room to shoot," Schoellman said. "Fortunately, I was able to knock it down. We were all glad to crack the egg and get our first victory. I think we can use this momentum moving forward to get some more wins in the near future."

Gabbard led Highlands with 21 points and Jacob Noe added eight. Highlands made six three-pointers. Gabbared also made two with Noe and Jack Hegge making one each.

Freshman Wyatt Vieth led the Crusaders (2-4 overall and in 9th Region play) with 15 points. Senior guard Dominic Croyle followed with 13 on three triples.

Highlands faces Trinity Grammar from Sydney, Australia on Monday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Basketball, Girls:
Highlands 65, Bracken County 23:

The Bluebirds (4-1 overall) ran away from the Lady Bears (0-6) in the Donna Murphy Classic at Newport not allowing Bracken County to score more than nine points in a quarter.

Highlands saw all 12 players that played score at least two points. Junior Hanna Buecker led the way with 15 points, six rebounds and two steals and junior Zoie Barth had 12 points, an assist and two steals.

The Bluebirds used ball pressure to run away with the win recording 17 steals off 28 Bracken County turnovers. Junior Chloe Jansen led Highlands with three steals. Highlands had 12 turnovers on six Lady Bear steals. Highlands also won the rebounding battle, 32-20.

"It's a lot of fun," said Emma Riccobene, Highlands freshman forward. "We're all supporting each other on the bench. We're all getting comfortable (with roles). I always think that it doesn't matter what the level of your opponent is. As long as you play hard and you do what you're supposed to do, you'll get what you're supposed to get out of the game."

Highlands wound up taking 22 more shots than Bracken County. The Bluebirds made 27-of-53 attempts for just under 51 percent including 4-of-13 from three-point range for just under 31 percent. Bracken County hit 8-of-31 shots for just under 26 percent including 3-of-9 for 33 percent.

Neither team shot free throws well. Highlands made 7-of-16 for 44 percent and Bracken County made 4-of-15 for 27 percent.
