Highlands Declaws Fern Creek
Highlands pulled away from the Louisville Fern Creek Tigers (7-5) by a 70-46 count using a 24-11 blitzing in the second quarter. The Bluebirds expanded a 19-18 deficit to a 42-30 halftime lead and extended it to 57-40 after three quarters.
Junior Zoie Barth once again did her usual thing for Highland scoring 29 points on 11-of-15 shooting including 3-of-4 from three-point range and hitting all four free-throw attempts. Barth also had eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The next leading scorer for Highlands was junior Hanna Buecker with 14. Buecker made 4-of-6 shots and all six free throws to go with three assists, three rebounds and a steal.
Highlands made 24-of-50 shots for 48 percent including 6-of-14 from three-point range and 16-of-22 free throws for 73 percent. Fern Creek made 19-of-56 shots for 34 percent including 6-of-24 from three-point land for 41 percent and 2-of-4 free throws for 50 percent.
Highlands had 17 assists, 14 steals and 14 turnovers compared to two assists, nine steals and 21 turnovers for Fern Creek. Junior Chloe Jansen had four rebounds, five assists and three steals and freshman Kenzie Nehus added three assists.
Senior Alexis Smith led the Tigers with 22 points. She made 9-of-16 shots including 3-of-8 from three-point range.
Fern Creek won the rebounding battle, 32-31. Senior Sierra Hancock nabbed a team-high seven for the Tigers.
Highlands battles Cooper (5-8) at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Cooper defeated Franklin County, 64-58 in the second game of the classic.
