Soccer, Girls:
Highlands 2, Ryle 0:

The Ladybirds (8-0-1 overall) earned a tough 9th Region victory over the Lady Raiders (4-5-1). They stayed undefeated in region play at 4-0.

Highlands outshot Ryle, 14-5. Ladybird junior goalkeeper Olivia McQueary saved all five Ryle shots as the Ladybirds have outscored the opposition, 39-1 on the season. Highlands has shut out eight teams.

"(The Lady Raiders) were very physical," said Brian Wiefering, Highlands Head Coach. "They were better than they were last year. We had snapshots where we had good passing combinations. We'd have 10 or five minutes where we'd have good possession. But it wasn't nearly as good as it could have been. It was nice to see that even when they didn't play their best, they were still able to beat a good Ryle team."

The Ladybirds led 1-0 at halftime. Freshman Ali Gessner scored her team-high ninth goal of the season on an assist from freshman Lauren Deckert. That marked Deckert's first assist on the season. Gessner has a team-high 22 points on the season adding in the four assists.

Then with about 15 minutes left, Highlands scored again. Junior Molly Wiefering took a corner kick and younger sister Maria Wiefering, a freshman, put it in.

"I just have to see my corners a lot. All I was really thinking is I have to put it in the right place and my team is good enough to finish almost every corner kick," Molly Wiefering said. "It was awesome that this time, it got to my little sister. It was a lot more helpful being up by two because they were pressuring us really hard. It pumped our adrenaline up and we started playing a lot better."

Highlands will see how it matches up with the state contenders starting Monday in the annual Lexington Catholic Challenge Cup. The Ladybirds take on the defending state champion Louisville Sacred Heart Valkyries (7-1-1), who lost for the first time Saturday at Evansville (Ind.) Reitz Memorial, 3-0.
